We've still got a long time to wait for Transformers 5, but we've had a steady stream of news lately that gives us a better idea of what the next film could be about. Paramount are working hard on creating plenty more movies for the franchise, as well as some animated features. A potential TV show is being discussed, along with plenty more merchandise coming soon from Hasbro.
After putting together a writers' room with some of Hollywood's best scribes, it's no surprise that Paramount have big plans for Transformers, with movies supposedly planned for the next 10 years. Now we've finally got some dates for these sequels, as well as at least one spinoff, but The Walking Dead comic writer Robert Kirkman has recently revealed his departure from the Transformers franchise.
Leaving The Writers' Room
Back when the Transformers writers' room was announced, Robert Kirkman was one of the most exciting names on the list.
Famed for creating the comic The Walking Dead, and helping to create the hit TV show, Kirkman promised to bring a fresh perspective and a unique edginess to the Transformers franchise. But as he recently revealed to Collider, he only had one session in the Transformers writers' room before he was forced to leave.
"I have to say, I was only in that room for a day before I found out that I was having my throat surgery that kept me out of Comic Con. So as much as I love Transformers, I had to leave that room."
Although this is disappointing for fans, Kirkman is confident that there are "lots of amazing things coming" from the franchise in the future. And now we might just know what he was referring to.
Sequels & Spinoffs
We were promised tons more Transformers films, and it looks like Paramount are ready to deliver! Recent reports have confirmed three more Transformers movies in the next three years: Transformers 5, 6, and a Bumblebee spinoff set between those films.
So here's the release dates for this mammoth Transformers marathon...
- Transformers 5 - 23rd June, 2017
- Bumblebee spinoff - 8th June, 2018
- Transformers 6 - 28th June, 2019
These movies will be filmed back-to-back to meet the release dates, Paramount CEO Brad Grey told The Hollywood Reporter. Grey also revealed that the Bumblebee movie will be produced at "a lower cost" than the other films, and confirmed that beyond these sequels, we can expect much more from the Transformers franchise.
"There are characters in the Transformers universe that can be and should be made into their own movies. We’ve brought in a pretty strong writing staff run by Akiva Goldsman, and they have put together eight or nine interesting stories. So, between that group and Steven Spielberg’s guidance on a story level, these characters are a big business for us to pursue."
Of course there's also Paramount's proposed cinematic universe, which will feature crossover films between the Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Micronauts. All in all, it looks like Paramount's got the future of the Transformers franchise totally planned out, with many, many, more movies to come. Watch this space!
