With the anticipation for superhero films like Batman v.Superman and Captain America: Civil War, it is easy to forget that other superhero properties are on the scene this year. In this case I refer to none other than the X-Men series. The franchise has already found success with the spin-off film Deadpool, but series will hopefully continue its momentum with the upcoming summer blockbuster: X-Men: Apocalypse. Continuing from the story started in X-Men: First Class, the new film brings Prof.Xavier (James McAvoy) and his young students together in a new adventure that pits the team against the powerful mutant Apocalypse. With the other superhero movies getting moviegoers' attention, it has been difficult for the likes of X-Men: Apocalypse to gain momentum in regards of being an anticipated blockbuster. Yet that could change as of today thanks to the full trailer to X-Men: Apocalypse arriving online.
Watching this new trailer it is hard not to look forward to Apocalypse as it features a massive spectacle and action worthy of any superhero movie. However even with the impressive moments in the trailer, X-Men Apocalypse still has an uphill battle. Not only does it have to compete against the other superhero movies of 2016, but it also has meet expectations created by its 2014 predecessor: X-Men:Days of Future Past. There is no denying that X-Men:Apocalypse has a battle ahead of it, but there is way for this film to be another dynamic installment in this superhero franchise.
It has been stated that X-Men: Apocalypse will be a conclusion to the story started in First Class. How this direction will play out remains to be seen, but the concept of Apocalypse being an ending could help the film's chances from standing out. The way to do this if for the conclusion not to be a straightforward ending, but rather one that passes the torch to a new brand of X-Men. The new film features characters such as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Angel and Storm. As seen in the trailer each of these characters have an important role to play with the fate of the world being put on these young mutant's shoulders. Not only will this make for beneficial character development, but it could be used as a starting point for these characters' own adventure in a new set of X-Men films. While we have seen these character before in the previous trilogy, the fact remains that the X-Men were already an established team. Having a set of films that documents the classic X-Men becoming the iconic team could make for a refreshing direction on both the characters and the series as a whole.
Not only would this concept be beneficial for upcoming film, but it could also help to give the X-Men franchise a wider sense of variety. With the success of Deadpool, it is more than likely that 20th Century Fox will be seeking to make another Deadpool film and a possible X-Force movie. If the X-Force are coming to the silver screen then that would give the film series two different teams of X-Men to work with. This would be a creative move on the studio's part as it would not only give the franchise two different perspectives and showcase the characters that encompass the X-Men ensemble. Granted this idea may not happen as franchise's future does rest on the execution (and success) of X-Men: Apocalypse.
It is hard to see just where the X-Men series goes from here. It is possible that the studio could end the X-Men story with Apocalypse and point all their attention to the likes of Deadpool and the X-Force; or maybe Fox will have an entourage of new movies focusing on the multiple teams. Yet no matter the case, X-Men: Apocalypse is going to be a pivotal film in this superhero franchise. While the quality of the film has yet to be seen, I think that the X-Men franchise will be making another fundamental change come this summer.
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27th.
