After two years of waiting since Marvel's announcement of five series based on their street-level characters, rumors of cancellation, uncertainty and then the reveal of the series' main actor, Marvel Entertainment has finally released the first official image from their upcoming Netflix series 'Iron Fist' and confirmed the actor who will be playing martial artist Danny Rand:
First, let's breakdown the image. The name above, "Joy Meachum", is not a random one.
In the comic books, the founders of Rand Meachum Inc. are Iron Fist and Joy's parents respectively, Wendell Rand and Harold Meachum.
After Wendell takes his family and business partner in search for the city of K'un-L'un, he dies thanks to Harold, who also leaves Rand's wife and Danny to their fate after she declines his help. Danny's mother eventually dies.
After Danny survives this incident and becomes the Iron Fist, he comes back to New York to exact revenge on Harold Meachum. But when he sees the evil businessman is missing both legs, he feels pity and leaves... but a ninja comes and murders him anyway. Harold's daughter, Joy Meachum, being manipulated, blames Iron Fist for her father's murder.
Adding to this, Marvel has confirmed which point in Iron Fist's life will be the series' main focus ahead of the release of 'Marvel's The Defenders' through their press release:
Marvel and Netflix are pleased to announce that Finn Jones (“Game of Thrones”) will star in “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” the newest series coming soon only to Netflix.
Jones will play Daniel Rand, who returns to New York City after being missing for years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
“Danny Rand is a very complicated character. He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means,” said Executive Producer and showrunner, Scott Buck. “Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, revelatory way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny.”
“Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb. “Now that we’ve found our Danny Rand, we’ve completed our principal cast for the upcoming Defenders on Netflix and we are thrilled to continue to show audiences unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe.”
"Marvel's Iron Fist" is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.
This press release confirms what Entertainment Weekly revealed a few weeks ago: Finn Jones is playing Iron Fist.
Aside from his own series, Finn Jones is rumored to make his first appearance as Danny Rand in the Marvel Universe in this year's 'Marvel's Luke Cage'.
No release date was given.
WHAT DOES THIS IMAGE MEAN FOR THE SERIES?
The form reads "To Joy Meachum"; below that, the subject is marked as "Urgent" and written further down is the question "Who is Danny Rand?"
As revealed by Marvel's press release, the series will tell the story of how Danny Rand comes back to New York City after being missing for years. This is obviously a reference to the hero's training in K'un-L'un but... what happens after that?
If they follow the comic book storyline, we can expect to see someone who was teased all the way back in 'Marvel's Daredevil' Season 1:
In the comics, Davos a.k.a Steel Serpent, is an individual obsessed with the power of the Iron Fist, who becomes even more frustrated when Danny Rand's father, Wendell, beats him in combat. Davos was eventually exiled to Earth.
After some time, a young woman, Joy Meachum, allies herself with him to take down the man she thinks is responsible for her father's murder, Iron Fist a.k.a Danny Rand. Meanwhile, Davos agreed to work for her until he's able to kill Rand.
So if we take a look at this information and how Joy and Davos tie together, does this mean we will get the Steel Serpent as one of the main characters in the series? Perhaps the first season's main villain?
What do you think? Do you believe Steel Serpent will be featured in the series? Could he be the main villain? Or could the first season focus on the betrayal against Danny Rand in K'un-L'un? Are you excited for 'Marvel's Iron Fist'?
