Put away your copies of Sharknado, it looks like we've finally been given a shark film that's worth the watch!

When it comes to shark based films, there hasn't really been much to shout about. Ever since the success and cult status of Steven Spielberg's JAWS franchise, the genre has seen its share of bargain bin titles. A quick google highlights the scale of the problem with ludicrous names such as 'Sharktopus', 'Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus' and 'Sharknado 3: Oh, Hell No!' all amongst the bizarre titles.

With her husband killing it at the box office courtesy of Deadpool, Blake Lively looks set to reinvigorate the terror of the ocean thanks to her upcoming film The Shallows.

In a short but tense trailer, director Jaume Collet-Serra outlines the plot of the film and it's rather simple. Blake Lively is stranded on a rock, hurt and a circling shark wants to eat her.

Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra is already well adversed in bringing thrillers to the screen. Famous for his action-thrillers Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night, the Spanish director also has experience in the horror genre, directing the 2005 horror remake House of Wax and the 2009 film Orphan.

The Shallows will be a white knuckle affair, bringing quality back to shark films that they've so dearly missed. We'll find out 24 Jun 2016.
