After several years of anticipation, the best of the best is finally happening!!! The Dark Knight meets the Man of Steel for the first time ever on the big screen!!! (SPOILER FREE TERRITORY AHEAD)
After several years in developmental hell, the clash between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel has finally happened. Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice has raised the stakes that were left at the end of Man of Steel and the anticipation has already started building towards a shared DC Cinematic Universe just like what Marvel did when it built up Iron Man to lead to the ever popular Avengers movie.
Taking place several months after the events of Man of Steel, Superman's (Henry Cavill) confrontation with General Zod (Michael Shannon) brings up some concern to political powers thanks to the destruction of Metropolis. However, this also brings him into conflict with Batman (Ben Affleck), who sets out on a personal vendetta against Superman. The rivalry gets brutal and furious between the two. All the while, Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) sets out on his own agenda to take down both Batman and Superman. And Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is thrown in the middle of all this.
Now this movie is one word: AMAZING!!! And while most critics say that this movie is bad, I digress. This DC movie is epic in every sense of the word. From start to finish, it is a great time for everyone who loves Batman and Superman or both. But there are some elements that the movie missed.
The first thing that this film got right is the choice for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Ben Affleck is amazing in the role of the Dark Knight. I find this as a comeback for him in the superhero role. His last superhero film was him being in the title role for the 2003 flop Daredevil. But Affleck comes through to prove that he is a great Batman. And he really is. I think that Affleck is now my all-time favorite Batman with Christian Bale being #2 and Michael Keaton being #3.
Second, Henry Cavill still proves that he is fit for the role of Superman/Clark Kent. Believe me, you will not be disappointed. I feel that Cavill had to step up his game for the role of Superman in this movie. This is probably a bigger step for Superman to take from where he started in Man of Steel during his confrontation with Zod. Nobody can argue that if there is anyone really good to play Superman for the DC Universe movies, Henry Cavill is probably my personal favorite.
Third, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. She was a really great choice for this awesome character. When I first heard that she was going to be Wonder Woman, I thought to myself 'Idk.' But when I saw her as Gisele in the Fast and Furious movies, I thought to myself 'What if Gal Gadot was a superhero?' And my question was answered here. In the movie, Wonder Woman has her own agenda aside from what Batman and Superman are doing. But she's there to help in the sense that she's a superhero. If there is any actress to play Wonder Woman, Gadot is my first choice. And she was fantastic in the role.
And we have Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, who is the main villain in the movie. Now over the years, Lex Luthor in the movies was a real-estate tycoon. But here, we finally get LexCorp and Lex has his own agenda to take down Superman. I wanted Lex to be the villain in Man of Steel. But Zod was a really great villain in that movie. Since he is Superman's archenemy, it totally makes sense to make him the main villain in this movie. Originally, it was rumored that either Bryan Cranston or Billy Zane would be Lex. But when Eisenberg was cast, I was like 'Okay. Let's give him a shot.' And Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was funny. But he was also menacing and evil and wanted to take down both Batman and Superman in his own way. And it was done really well.
And what better to talk about than the supporting crew that includes the return of Laurence Fishburne and Amy Adams who reprise their roles from Man of Steel as Perry White and Lois Lane. Now Adams has as much a big role in this movie as she did in the previous film. And she still proves to be the best Lois Lane period. And she still knows who Superman is (more on that during my spoiler review). Now on the other hand, there are some pretty new faces. But the most prominent one is Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth. And in my humble opinion, Irons proves to be a really good Alfred, but nothing can beat the performance done by Michael Gough and Michael Caine. But still, Irons is really good in the role of Alfred.
Now the only thing that threw me off is the Doomsday character. My guess is that he was just thrown into the movie just so they could have a big brute to fight in the climax. Just thought that the whole Doomsday thing didn't work out as well as everything else did.
Another amazing thing here is that Zack Snyder throws in a couple of teases toward the up and coming Justice League movies. No matter what the critics say about this film, Zack Snyder remains a really great director. And his direction (for the most part) was done perfectly in this movie. But I wish they would have shown more on the teases for the Justice League build-up (more on the Spoiler review).
So all in all, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an overall great time with action, exciting moments, the debut of Wonder Woman and a great build up to the Justice League.
