With the recent success of Captain America Civil War, fans are dying to see what's in store for Marvel's future plans, along with Dr Strange releasing in November 2016. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown a lot since Iron Man in 2008, the film and character who started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel is contuniung to expand their horizons and make room for new characters.

With the MCU expanding, just how many superheroes are there and will there be once the phase 3 of the MCU is complete? From the beginning all the way until Avengers: Infinity Wars parts 1 and 2. Let's do the math...

The Avengers: 11

In Avengers, there were originally 6 members, but after the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron last year we were introduced to 3 additional characters to the Avengers' roster. Those characters are Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Vision. Although Quicksilver died in the end, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, signed on for multi-picture deal with Marvel.

There is no confirmation if we'll see Quicksilver pop up in the MCU or not, but Nick Fury does have a lot of secrets. Who knows? Maybe he has Quicksilver's body in recovery. There is 11 people in the Avengers if you include the two new members at the end of AoU. Falcon and War Machine, whereas Scarlet Witch and Vision were already qualified as Avengers.

Guardians of The Galaxy: 5

The Guardians of The Galaxy is a pretty small group of 5 criminals turned heroes. We've got our protectors of Earth, and a whole lot of them, the Guardians protect space. There hasn't been any confirmation about new characters joining the cast for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2. But rumors were flying around saying that we might see Adam Warlock or Nova in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

James Gunn has said that his favorite character will be in Guardians of The Galaxy 2. But the actual number of Guardians of The Galaxy members is still kind of a mystery. We did see Cosmo the Dog in the first GoTG film and with a first look at Howard The Duck as a post credits scene. We still don't know if Cosmo or Howard the Duck will join the Guardians or not, we don't even know if we will see them again.

Inhumans: Unknown (7 in the comics)

The Inhumans were planned by Marvel since the beginning of phase 3, but there has not yet been any confirmation or a green light for the film. Last year there were rumors about Inhumans being cancelled, until this year it's still flying around. Vin Diesel was supposedly cast in the Inhumans movie but there was never a confirmation or anything. But if they end up making an Inhumans movie, there probably will be 7 characters, like the comics.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

Ant-Man's first appearance in the MCU was last year, and we were teased with an official first look at Evangeline Lilly's Wasp suit. Marvel has added an untitled Ant-Man and The Wasp film in phase 3's timeline but no confirmed release date. Speculation says filming will most likely begin next year or 2018. So there's 2 more.

Dr Strange

Dr Strange's first solo outing in the MCU is in November. With an official trailer released last month. Dr Strange counts as one character, unless you count Tilda Swinton's, the Ancient One. Dr Strange will show us what the mystical and magical side of Marvel looks like. With fans' speculation that Dr Strange's necklace, AKA The Eye of Agamotto is indeed an Infinity stone, some say it's the time stone and others say it's the soul stone, we are in for a magical ride with Dr Strange.

Defenders: 4 or 5

Marvel is dominating everything
Marvel is dominating everything

With Daredevil's second season wrapped up, Luke Cage's Netflix series in August, Iron Fist is currently filming and Jessica Jones also coming with a second season, Marvel is dominating everything. Iron Fist is most probably set to release next year or 2018. Which we do not know much about. Luke Cage is coming soon.

It hasn't yet been confirmed how many heroes will be in Defenders. At first it was 4, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. But now that Netflix has confirmed a Punisher series starring Jon Bernthal, it's not confirmed if Jon Bernthal AKA Punisher will be a part of the Defenders.

Additional characters: 7

Additional characters in the MCU includes:

  • Black Panther
  • Sharon Carter/ Agent 13
  • Spider-Man
  • Captain Marvel
  • Winter Soldier
  • Nick Fury
  • Maria Hill

So how many are there?

So that means there are 38 characters that will be in the MCU by the end of phase 3. And if we include some rumored characters like Moon Knight, Nova or Adam Warlock it'd be more. The MCU will continue to expand and introduce new characters for us to love. So...

What does this mean for Infinity Wars?

38 characters in the MCU. But if we separate Marvel's TV universe from the movie universe there wouldn't be much. Some people are wondering if Iron Man's going to go to Hell's Kitchen and find the Defenders, like he did with Spider-Man. But Kevin Fiege did say the Marvel TV universe will be kept separate from the Cinematic Universe, but who knows? Maybe they'd consider not separating these two universes. Since Marvel's TV universe are always referencing events that happened in the Cinematic Universe but the Cinematic Universe doesn't seem to do the same thing.

If Kevin Fiege considers not separating these two universes, then we may be looking at Marvel's first, TV to Movie crossover event, for Infinity Wars. All we can do is hope they won't separate these two universes, like the way DC is doing with their Extended Universe.

What do you think? Will we ever see a TV to Movie crossover event in the MCU?
