Fans were beside themselves after seeing what happened to Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, but the actor behind the iconic character, Harrison Ford, felt it was all too fitting.
During a Q&A with tumblr and Entertainment Weekly, the actor who portrayed the space smuggler revealed that he'd been discussing the possibility of his character's death for a very long time:
"I’ve been arguing for Han Solo to die for about 30 years, not because I was tired of him or because he’s boring, but his sacrifice for the other characters would lend gravitas and emotional weight."
With 1984's Return Of The Jedi, Ford had thought the best use of his character would be "for him to sacrifice himself to a high ideal and give [the movie] a little bottom."
Transcripts full of plot details show that screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan had originally included Han Solo's death in Return Of The Jedi's storyline, but George Lucas overruled that idea.
The Force Awakens is set for release on Digital HD download on April 1, with the Blu-ray combo pack and DVD to follow on April 5.
