We are in a golden age of comic book movies. This week, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is coming out in theaters and we get to see Batman and Superman on screen together for the first time in history as they battle out their differences. It seems to be that comic book fans these days are a bit spoiled. If these superhero films aren't exactly how they want them, they tend to complain. Sometimes, a good film will be trampled on, even though it really it isn't that bad. The expectations for superhero films are high and some films may not reach that level. Some of these films get their negative rap from a lot of different factors and they really don't deserve the negative connotations. It turns out that a lot of people who like these films and don't speak up, like myself, as the general consensus for these particular 'bad' films are usually negative. So, let's look at the five most underrated superhero films. These films are overlooked at, hated on when they are not that bad, and forgotten in the mist of the golden age of comic book films.

5. The Incredible Hulk

Coming it at number 5 is The Incredible Hulk. This film isn't necessarily hated but is just conceived as a mediocre film. The movie stands up with the other 11 amazing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and lots of fans usually put it at number 12 on their lists. As I think it deserves the number 9 or 10 spot, that does not mean I do not like this film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe does not really have any 'bad' films or flops. It consists of many great films that are hard to beat. Also, they had to re-cast Bruce Banner from Edward Norton to Mark Ruffalo. As I prefer Ruffalo over Norton, he was definitely not a bad Bruce Banner at all. The Incredible Hulk was one of the first and MCU movies as it showed us real emotion and how hard it is for Bruce Banner to be the Hulk. Also, the Abomination was a bad-ass villain and his fight with the Hulk still stands as one of the best fight scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, put aside the fact that they re-casted Banner and don't compare it to the other Marvel movies and watch it as its own film and you will see it is not as bad as you would think.

4. Captain America: The First Avenger

The only reason this film doesn't rank higher on this list is because most people generally like this film. Captain America: The First Avenger is generally liked but I think it's an awesome film and I love it! Like The Incredible Hulk, it stands up against all the other amazing MCU films but it still ranks at 6 or 7 on my list. I think the movie was a great period piece and World War II film. It was a great and fun movie introducing Captain America and the menacing Red Skull. Many people complain that we never saw enough of Red Skull and that the end of the movie was rushed. Well, keep your fingers crossed for Avengers: Infinity Wars.

3. Batman Returns

This movie is always completely forgotten about by everyone. Batman Returns is an awesome sequel to the original 1989 Batman. In my opinion, I think it's an even better film. We get to see more of Tim Burton's gloomy Gotham, which I absolutely love! We get amazing performances from Christopher Walken and most of all, Danny DeVito as the Penguin. Michelle Pfeiffer also played a great Catwoman and as there are three villains in the film, they are all well developed and are very well portrayed and are definitely not crammed in. A lot of superhero movies cram in too many characters and that's where the quality of the film goes down and as Batman Returns was a decade before the golden age of comic book movies even begun, studios should take notes from this Burton masterpiece. This movie is the opposite of cheesy as the franchises' later installments and is my personal favorite Batman film to date as I really do not care much for the Dark Knight Trilogy, but that's for another day.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron is looked upon as an 'okay' or 'good' film. In reality, it is an fantastic film and is one of the best in the MCU. Avengers: Age of Ultron came out last year and as most of you can remember, there was a massive amount of hype around the movie; so much hype that the movie could not live up to it. Therefore, the movie was spit upon and people just give it a bad rap. Fans complain about how it's not as good as the original Avengers; they are wrong! I think this movie is a perfect comic book team-up film. It had its problems like any movie, as Ultron could have been a bit more menacing, but he was still a great villain and is one of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is some great action, classic Marvel humor, and setup for future Marvel films. Everyone should go and watch this film again and forget all its negative connotations and enjoy as it is quite an entertaining film.

1. Spider-Man 3

Here we go. This is the one film that most people absolutely hate and some fans including myself actually really enjoy. The Sam Ramii trilogy is absolutely fantastic. The first two films portray Spider-Man and his world in an awesome way. I think I can say that Spider-Man 2 is my favorite superhero movie of all time, so there's that. Spider-Man 3 shares a lot of the magic of the first two films as it concludes the story. It does have a few mistakes like emo-Peter Parker and cramming in Venom. It was Sony who forced Ramii to fit Venom in as he would attract more viewers (there goes Sony messing more things up). Since Spider-Man 3 didn't do as well as it was supposed to do, we will never get to see a Spider-Man 4 with Sam Ramii and Toby Maguire. Spider-Man 3 has awesome action, a great story nonetheless, and is overall not a perfect film but is pretty damn good and most of all, entertaining. If the critics weren't so harsh to the film, we would have a Spider-Man 4 and we would never have had to see The Amazing Spider-Man films. Sad, isn't it?
