Since the late 1970's filmmakers have been trying to find a new way to bring the terror of a shark attack to the big screen. Steven Spielberg's Jaws isn't just the best animals-gone-wild movie ever, it's also one of the best thrillers of all-time. The result is an almost 40 year shadow that the sub-genre can't seem to escape from. The latest attempt to bring nautical terror to the big screen is The Shallows and it is looking to be a worthy attempt.

Blake Lively stars in the survival thriller, as a surfer who is attacked by a shark while alone. She ends up stranded on a rock just 200 yards from shore. However, her leg's gaping wound continues to attract the great white and a deadly will of wits ensues. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Run All Night, Non-Stop), who seems to be taking a bit of a departure from the gritty action films that he has been making with Liam Neeson of late.

This new spin appears to infuse a mix of survival horror with Spielberg's proven deep sea formula, which could make the movie stand out this summer. This month, 10 Cloverfield Lane was released and was relatively successful, despite having limited shooting locations and a small cast. So, clearly they are hoping to have similar success with The Shallows, despite its release during the crowded movie season.

The Shallows will need a great script, direction by Collet-Serra, and a standout performance from Lively in order to catch fire. Ron Howard's attempt at bringing the Moby Dick origin story last year, In the Heart of the Sea, failed to attracted audiences with its large scale production. It will be interesting to see if the smaller and tighter production of The Shallows, can capture the imagination of moviegoers. This will be a movie to look out for. Enjoy the trailer.

Official Synopsis:

In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.

The Shallows opens on June 24th, 2016.
