If going to the movie theater to digest the latest, eagerly anticipated blockbuster is the glitz and the glamor, then the second wind of a Blu-ray release is like the sagacious, understated-yet-everlasting sibling of the cinema.
Even with a movie of the magnitude of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which you may have already seen numerous times, the home release has the treasure trove of behind-the-scenes extras.
We'll be guaranteed copious amounts of intergalactic golden nuggets on the Episode VII Blu-ray, and to get the appetite in full force, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, who portrayed Maz Kanata, has shared a brief clip on her Twitter, showing some exclusive footage of the creation of the CGI character.
You Can Watch The Video Below:
Nyong'o, who won the Academy Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave (2013), performed by using motion capture, with new technology also allowing her to be present on set and to interact with the cast.
The character of Maz Kanata is a former pirate and smuggler who is over 1,000-years-old, spending her later years managing the tavern on Takonda. She had a small yet crucial role in Episode VII, passing on Luke Skywalker's lightsaber to Rey.
'A Timeless, Wise Figure'
Director J. J. Abrams revealed the inspiration behind the character was one of his high school teachers, Rose Gilbert, who taught for 51 years, and retired at the ripe age of 93. In an interview with The Telegraph, Abrams said:
"We really wanted the story to feel authentic, despite being a wild fantasy. I mentioned Rose in an early story meeting as a sort of timeless, wise figure that I’d actually known in my life. [She] was always at the center of the inspiration of Maz.”
Unfortunately, Gilbert passed away in 2013, but there couldn't be more fitting a tribute than a character in a movie that has gone down in history for smashing box office figures, grossing an astonishing $2.06 billion worldwide.
Nyong'o will be reprising her role for Rian Johnson's Episode VIII. But, until then, we can look forward to tons of juicy goodies on The Force Awakens Blu-ray, which is released on April 5th.
