Melissa McCarthy's 8-year-old daughter makes an appearance in The Boss, but her mom was initially seriously against exposing her child to the cold, hard public eye.

McCarthy explained to People magazine that her daughter Vivian ended up nagging her way to a short role after she wouldn't take no for an answer, the 45-year-old actor told interviewers that:

"We were very hesitant to do that [cast Vivienne]. By hesitant, I mean, we kept saying flat out 'no,' school plays? You can do that. You don’t need to be doing this as a job. You're in school. That's your job."

Vivian however knew there were other kids in the film and she convinced her mom to at least let her audition, McCarthy explained:

"She knew there were kids in this movie. When Vivian asked, "Am I not allowed to at least try? I said, 'Yes, yes, you are of course allowed to try."

McCarthy's daughter has clearly been watching from the wings and absorbing some of her mom's ample talent though because when she was being driven to her big day by her father, Ben Falcone, it was a very serious affair. Melissa explained:

"Ben was trying to joke around with her on the way to set but she said something to the effect of, 'Do you mind if we joke around after I'm done? I think she [her character, Michelle] is probably pretty upset right now and when you make me laugh I don’t feel like her.' "

Impressed with her dedication to the part Melissa and Ben (who is also the director of the movie) decided to let Vivian have her moment in the spotlight, but McCarthy only allowed her daughter to be on the big screen because of the movie's positive message to women, she explained:

"Watching [women] become friends and then essentially become family, that's the kind of thing I root for when I watch a movie. Iant to see that. I love to show women and girls uniting. I love showing that because I think so often in movies, you see women just fighting and not liking each other. That's not real life. That's not the norm."

When asked about how she rated Vivian's performance, McCarthy joked she told her offspring:

"Okay! Great job! Do it again when you're 20!"
