Nick Fury is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D and is the greatest spy of all time. Why haven't fans been able to spot him in the trailer? Why isn't Samuel. L Jackson on any cast listing for Civil War? These facts from the comics may support the theory that he is in hiding and supporting Captain America's cause. This breakdown should help see the reason why Nick Fury is helping Cap. If this theory is true...SPOILERS!

Secret Wars

Secret Wars was constructed by Nick Fury before the events of Civil War to take down tech villains. Nick Fury recruited Captain America, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Black-Widow, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Daisy Johnson. This group later sticks together to fight during Civil War. Nick Fury later recruits the Fantastic Four and the X-Men; explaining that he has to go into hiding.

Maria Hill

While Nick Fury is in hiding, Maria Hill takes over as head of S.H.I.E.L.D. She is portrayed in the films as a tough woman that values the humans more than the super soldiers. She also feels this way in the comics. In Civil War Maria Hill corners Captain America trying to force him to sign the Superhero Registration Act. Obviously things don't work to plan and this spawns the Civil War. In the upcoming film she probably will be the head of S.H.I.E.L.D helping to move this theory closer.

Captain America and Nick Fury's friendship

These two have been fighting with each other in the comics for a very long time and have grown a lot of respect for one another. In the films Nick Fury is shown to always be more on Iron Man's side but that has always been the way of Nick Fury in the comics. He needs everyone to trust him so that he can get what he wants. He is a close friend to Steve Rogers though and will almost always support his cause. For example the Punisher in Civil War joins Captain America's ranks due to just the fact of how much he respects Captain America for the war.

The Civil War comic

Once Iron Man's side started to recruit super-villains into their ranks, things started to obviously get out of hand. Events such as a cloned Thor killing Goliath, superheroes revealing their identities and even cities being destroyed were up on the list of "too much". In the Civil War comics Nick Fury is in hiding still, but still finds a way to support Captain America. Nick Fury gives out secret identities and items needed to win the war. In the films, if out of hand situations like these happen, Nick Fury wouldn't stand for it. For example when Nick Fury shot down the jet so that it wouldn't release the nuke.

Absence of trailer and cast listing

The final point to bring home this theory; his absence in everything! Samuel L. Jackson confirmed that the cast list was correct and that he wouldn't appear on the big screen for Civil War. This doesn't mean we won't hear his name a couple of times. He is also absent from the Civil War comics because he is in hiding. This could prove the point that he is also in hiding and supporting behind the scenes of the war in the actual film. Does this mean Secret Wars happened and we didn't get to see it? Interesting thought.
