Supergirl has been an important part of DC Comics for close to 60 years.
Although, Kara Zor-El was initially killed off in 1985 and since then various characters have taken the mantle of Supergirl, in 2004 Kara was brought back and the interest in the character has only grown since then.
Nowadays, due to the awesomeness of the eponymous CBS TV show, Supergirl has had a even a stronger resurgence in popularity. However, did you know these five interesting facts about the DC Comics' character?
1. Her First Appearance In Comics Was 'Superman #123' (August 1958), Albeit Not As The Character With Which We Are Familiar.
In Superman #123, Jimmy Olsen uses a magic totem to wish a "Super-Girl" into existence as a helper for Superman. However, the two frequently get in each other's way, until she is fatally injured protecting Superman from a Kryptonite meteor.
Nevertheless, the positive fan reaction to Super-Girl led to introducing the character that we know and love the following year in Action Comics #252 (May 1959). Supergirl was created by Otto Binder (writer) and Al Plastino and Curt Swan (art).
2. Kara Is A Member Of The Red Lantern Corps!
The Red Lantern Corps is a group of anti-heroes that first made their debut in 2007, initially as an army fighting against the Green Lantern Corps. Supergirl gets involved with this group after obtaining a red ring, which grants its bearer powers based on rage.
Due to the fact that, Supergirl is a character known for not holding back when it comes to using her abilities, possessing this ring provokes an intriguing and perilous twist.
3. Only Three Actresses Have Played Supergirl On-Screen So Far!
The first actress to portray Kara was Helen Slater in the universally panned film Supergirl (1984). Furthermore, Laura Vandervoort became a series regular on Smallville (2001-2011) in season seven playing a character known as Kara Kent.
Most recently, (obviously) Melissa Benoist has (rather skillfully) portrayed Kara Zor-El in the CBS TV series Supergirl (2015-).
4. There Have Been Various Incarnations Of Supergirl!
These incarnations include (but are not limited to) Kara Zor-El, Power Girl (Kara Zor-L), Matrix, Laurel Gand, Linda Danvers, Cir-El and Ariella Kent.
5. She Has Her Own Super Pets!
Supergirl has a cat called Streaky the Supercat and a Super-Horse known as Comet.
Moreover, as weird as it may sound, in the 1960s Streaky the Supercat and Comet the Super-Horse even became members of the Legion of Super-Pets.
