The Academy Awards are definitely the most celebrated film event out there, but sadly for horror fans, it is an event that hardly ever recognizes the genre in its categories, and when they do, they try to mask it under different genres — especially "psychological thrillers." Because that sounds smarter, right?

The following list is an alternative for horror fans out there, who are not particularly interested in the Academy Award-winning nominees, but would love to watch some horror instead. For each movie that was nominated for Best Picture in the 2016 Oscars, there will be a horror flick with a similar plot or set-up. Needless to say, they aren't necessarily better, but definitely a fun alternative. Enjoy!

1. Instead of 'The Revenant'...

Which is a period movie about a man trying to survive in the cold American wilderness, so he can get revenge on the man responsible for his misfortune...

Watch 'Ravenous' (1999)!

Which is also a period movie about a man trying to survive in the cold American wilderness, so he can get revenge on the man responsible for his misfortune. (With a cannibalistic twist!)

2. Instead of 'Spotlight'...

Which is a movie about journalists trying to unveil a child abuse plot perpetrated by priests...

Watch 'Don't Torture A Duckling' (1972)!

Which is a movie about a reporter searching for the truth behind cases of violence against children, connected to priests. (With a serial killer twist!)

3. Instead of 'Brooklyn'...

Which stars Saoirse Ronan as a woman who moves to a new country to start over, but whose past soon catches up to her...

Watch 'Byzantium' (2013)!

Which also stars Saoirse Ronan as a woman who moves to a new country to start over, but whose past soon catches up to her. (With a vampire twist!)

4. Instead of 'Mad Max: Fury Road'... (wait, what?)

Which is the most badass action flick of the century and features a lot of badass characters fighting for survival in this post-apocalyptic world...

Watch 'Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead' (2014)!

They are both completely frantic, post-apocalyptic road movies with badass protagonists kicking ass, with a zombie twist! (No, seriously, why wouldn't you want to watch Mad Max?)

5. Instead of 'The Martian'...

Which features an astronaut trying to survive after being stranded on Mars...

Watch 'The Last Days On Mars' (2013)!

Which is also about astronauts stranded on Mars, with a zombie twist too! And c'mon, look at these damn posters!

6. Instead of 'The Big Short'...

Which features a group of people who foresee a real estate crisis and take action to take advantage of it...

Watch 'Dream Home' (2010)!

Which features a single woman who foresees a real estate financial crisis and takes action to take advantage of it, with a mass murder twist!

7. Instead of 'Room'...

Which features a boy and his mom locked up in a basement by a kidnapper...

Watch 'Chained' (2012)!

Either way you are going to find out what happens to a boy whose life is defined by a kidnapper who keeps his mother and him locked away. Except one of them doesn't have such a happy ending...

8. Instead of 'Bridge of Spies'...

A film about a man who swears to defend a criminal, going against his own families will, just to prove his moral system right, even though he is facing some pretty powerful and dangerous people...

Watch 'The Purge' (2012)!

Which also features a man risking everything to save a random person he's never met, but with a "masked killers" twist. There is also an awful lot of politics behind all of it.
