When the man in your life is an overweight guy and trying to get back in shape after decades of laying dormant like a dragon deep within the earth, the first thing that comes to mind is the gym. Time to hit the weights, time to get lifting, time to beef up are just a few thoughts that can run through the male mind as his inner beast starts to awaken.
He steps in the gym and tries to get back to his old routine and realizes how much heavier that routine has become. Benching 305lbs ain't going to happen anytime soon when he's struggling to lift 135lbs. It gets worse when he heads to the dumbbell rack to grab that set of 45 pound dumbbells for some bicep curls and discovers that he can only lift the 25 pound dumbbells correctly. The 45 minute cardio on the bike he use to do has been downgraded to 15 minutes tops.
He comes home to you with knees hurting, elbows yelling curse words at him, and you are tasked with having to massage his whole body while he lays screaming WHY! Day 1 is jotted down as a failure in his book and you're afraid day 2 ain't going to happen. Don't fret, there is another way.
Former wrestling champion Diamond Dallas Page has created a workout system called DDP YOGA-made for exactly this scenario, encompassing yoga positions and using dynamic resistance to elevate the heart rate to a fat burning zone while building strength and flexibility. DDP did away with all the "namaste" elements of yoga and broke it down to a raw physical system that really works your body without stressing joints and ligaments.
Your man may be a little resistant at first the moment he hears the word yoga, but there are plenty of well known athletes that have incorporated DDP Yoga into their workout routine as it is well known to help with injury recovery. Wrestlers like Chris Jericho and AJ Styles have testified how well the DDP Yoga system worked for them in dealing with their physical injuries. So if these guys can do it, yours can too!
What about his diet?
Great question, and the most important element in getting back to a healthy stage is the food you eat. There is a ton of different diets out there and I'm sure you have heard them all, but there is really only one diet with proven results that can help get the man in your life back to good health: the plant based diet.
UFC stars Nate Diaz, his brother Nick and several other MMA fighters have accredited their success in the octagon to a plant based diet. Medical News Today wrote that:
Eating animal fats and proteins has been shown in studies to raise a person's risk of developing cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, and a number of other illnesses and conditions. The fat and protein content of cow's milk is very different from human milk, leading some experts to suggest that we are not designed for consuming cow's milk. Men with early stage prostate cancer who make intensive changes in diet and lifestyle may stop or perhaps even reverse the progression of their illness, according to one study published in the Journal of Urology.
Another U.S study involving half-a-million people found that red meat and processed meat eaters died prematurely more frequently than other people. An article published in Food Technology in October 2012 explained that plant-based diets either minimize or completely eliminate people's genetic propensity to developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes contain no cholesterol and are low in fat, especially saturated fats. They are also high in fiber and other nutrients. There are several plant based foods that are good sources of protein, such as beans, peanuts, and soya.
There are plenty of plant based meat alternatives that taste great! Companies like Boca, Gardein, Field Roast, and Beyond Meat are creating meals that taste almost like the real thing. Look, when you eat a piece of meat or chicken with no seasoning, will it taste good? Of course not! It's going to be bland as heck and you'll be looking to grab the salt and pepper. Our brains and taste buds respond to the seasoning used to flavor our foods, that's it. These plant based alternatives are flavored in a way that is satisfying to both the brain and the palate.
Cooking a plant based diet isn't rocket science, and there are plenty of resources online to help make delicious, healthy meals. One of my favorite resources for plant based recipes that taste great and are easy to make is The Vegan Zombie on You Tube.
Losing weight to get back in shape is a tough journey, one that I'm currently on myself. Yet, these two systems combined have proven beneficial to my success as I have seen positive results in my health. I have seen the light and in less than 90 days I have dropped fat, built muscle, and have gotten rid of the pains and aches associated from years of not working out. So if your man is looking to finally take the journey toward good health, just remember this equation;
DDP Yoga + Plant Based Diet= Better Health.
