Now that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has come and gone, we have all seen Jason Momoa in his brief performance as Aquaman (a.k.a. Arthur Curry). With that being said, it would be helpful to have some background on Aquaman to understand that he is more than just some damp wimp.

So let's dive into the deep and take a look at five unexpected facts about Aquaman.

1. He Has Traveled Through Time And Space?

Over the years, Aquaman has been regarded as more an underwater creature, less a human being. But what some don't know is that he has gone on space adventures with Batman and even traveled back in time to Ancient Greece!

Arthur Curry often defends Earth by defeating night gods who come through hidden doorways and portals anywhere on Earth. Night gods are ancient monsters and demons who try to invade our planet whenever they get the opportunity.

So due to the fact that Arthur can travel underwater and on land, he is one of the only heroes who can patrol 100 percent of the Earth.

2. He Has A Son! And He's Dead?

Aquaman and his wife Mera had a son named Arthur Jr., who was killed by Black Manta. Arthur Jr. first appeared in Aquaman Issue 23 (1965) and was created by Nick Cardy. He even boasted the name Aquababy!

The death of their son put great stress on Mera and Aquaman's relationship and at one point caused Mera to leave him for a time.

To note, Aquaman later had another son with another woman and Mera too had another son, but the father of her second son has never been confirmed to be Aquaman, only assumed.

3. He Has Been Known To Throw A Bear Or Two...

In 1942, Aquaman caught wind of criminals who were hunting seals in order to make money off the trade of their fur. He promptly headed to the snowfields as fast as he could. When he neared the hunters, he crossed paths with a polar bear who wasn't in the best of moods. Rather than fight the bear and potentially let the hunters get away, he threw the carnivore at them. Batman has batarangs, Green Arrow has arrows, and Aquaman has a polar bear! Who knew?

4. He Was In SpongeBob SquarePants?

In SpongeBob SquarePants, there's Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, who are ultimately a parody of Aquaman and Aqualad. Interestingly, Mermaid Man's enemy is the Man Ray, who is basically a man in a stingray suit, which could be seen as a parody of Black Manta.

Don't forget that he was also in Family Guy!

1. He Founded The Justice League?

Some believe that Aquaman is just an additional character in the Justice League. Originally he founded the team, but more recently in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, he was added after the team had already been created.

It's definitely a safe bet on him being one of the founding members in our DC Cinematic Universe, as we've already seen a cameo of him in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In Conclusion...

Aquaman has been regarded as a wimp or less-than-powerful character over the years. But he is actually more powerful then some of the other characters and even has abilities that have helped him to save the Earth and the Justice League!
