So after watching Ben Afflecks performance as Batman/ Bruce Wayne in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice it got me thinking. Who is Batman for me?
I liked Batffleck, but i also liked some of the other movie Batmen. Growing up reading the DC comics of the Dark Knight like most people that read them I went head over heals in love with the caped crusader, this dark twisted character who had NO super powers was just thrilling to read.
Over many years in the comics we saw different styles by different writers and artiest of who Batman was for them, this included new suits, different attitudes, different goals for Batman, and different rules this vigilantly lived by, but all of them stuck with the Bruce Wayne losing his parents and becoming hell bent of cleaning up Gotham city of crime and becoming the worlds greatest detective (I know hold your horses: except Flashpoint). So if each writer/ artiest had there own take on Batman it is no surprise that when this caped crusader made the jump to the big screen each reboot of Batman would do the same. Some very different from others but all the same person!
Just looking at the Movie Batman creations I set out to find out just who is Batman in my eyes? Which movie Batman was the closest to how I envisioned the Dark Knight that shaped my childhood (and adulthood) from reading the comics.

1966- Batman: The Movie
So we start in 1966 and see Adam West cast as Batman for the movie and the TV series that was aired in the same year.
Adam West's Batman is probably the most crazy and eccentric cape crusader the big screen ever saw. This version of Batman saw a very different style costume (that had eyebrows!) but the same detective skills and passion for crime solving as the Batman i knew and loved from the comic book pages.
This Batman however had his own Batdance, endless supply of gadgets (including shark replant spray) and came complete with the side kick boy wonder.
Personally I thought this version of Batman was to sixties with its bright colours, over the top acting, and poor fight scenes. This wasn't the Dark Knight that I spent so much of my childhood (and later adulthood) reading.
Adam West's version of Batman will always be iconic for his strange way of speaking, thinking and crime fighting but he just wasn't the Batman I remembered, not to say it wasn't a good version of the character.

1989- Batman
Tim Burton had a very different vision of who Batman was to him. This time we see Michael Keaton dawn the Bat cowl a bring Batman to life from the pages of the comics to the silver screen and a very different Batman to what we had seen in the sixties movie.
Tim Burton's Batman was very dark and gritty compared to the light colourful Batman we had seen two decades before, but still retained the comic book style world of Batman we saw in the comic's with a industrial sixties style Gotham City back drop and wacky comic book villains and heroes.
This Batman was the first on screen movie Batman that dawned a very menacing Batsuit to strike fear into the crime lowlifes of the city, we heard the first deep Batman voice, and saw Bat gadgets straight from the pages of the DC comics including Batarangs, Batclaw and Batwing.

This Batman even seamed to live by the one rule Batman had from the comics- No killing even trying to save Jack Napier from death falling into the giant vat of acid. Until the The Joker pushed him way to far and then this Batman had to break the one and only rule.

This version of Bruce Wayne was amazing, it was like Tim Burton was in my head. Bruce very different to his other personality Batman, a man that comes across as an eccentric billionaire too self centered and stupid for anyone to possible consider him as Batman, even womanizing. This is how I imagined Bruce Wayne to be.

Bruce Wayne- 4
Batsuit- 4
Detective- 3
Gadgets- 4
Combat- 3

1992- Batman Returns
Return he did! Micheal Keaton back in black as Batman with Tim Burton directing once again. We see the same style Batman that I loved from the 1989 version this time with a slightly different suit, a darker story line (if that was possible) and a new set of villains.
At this point i was sure that Micheal Keaton was Batman! The Batman that I loved in all his glory on the big screen, but where could they go from here with the legacy of Batman.

1995- Batman Forever
Three years later and its ALL change. New director in the form of Joel Schumacher and a new Batman played by Val Kilmer this time.
Different director, different actor, and different direction of who Batman is.
This film is in my opinion the worst of all the Batman films ever made! Val Kilmer wasn't a bad Batman as his acting appeared very wooden and heartless but this made for a very poor Bruce Wayne. For me this took Batman backwards to the days of Adam West's Batman, silly suit, over the top gadgets, bright colours, unbelievable villains and the introduction of a side kick. With a poor story line insanely bad script the cast didn't stand a chance of making this a film to remember (for the right reasons). Sadly after watching this film i thought the Batman i knew and loved would never see the big screen again.

My Batscore out of 5:
Bruce Wayne- 2
Batsuit- 3

1997- Batman & Robin
Same director but new Batman. Ladies man George Clooney steps up to the plate to become the next Batman hoping to pull of a better performance then Val Two years before. Again Joel forces his version of Batman upon the watcher, giving him more suits, more ridiculous gadgets and more DC character appearances then any other Batman movie to date. I think the Joel really tried to give every fan of Batman what they wanted with this movie but in the end didn't know what the true fan wanted. I am sure there are fans of this Batman out there but there very few in number, even Clooney came out years late and apologised for the nipples on the Batsuite. Who puts nipples on a Batsuite? This was just crazy stuff. All in all it looked like the Batman franchise was falling apart and getting rather and farther away from what true fans wanted to see.

My Batscore out of 5:
Bruce Wayne- 3
Batsuit- 1
Detective- 2
Gadgets- 2
Combat- 4

2005- Batman Begins, 2008- The Dark Knight, and 2012- The Dark Knight Rises
So i thought that the on screen Batman was dead to me, I thought that i would never see a Batman in a film that i could ever relate too, until the visionary Christopher Nolan came along and took the franchise where know one had taken it before. Christian Bale taken over as a modern day Batman set in what could be real life, no comic book back drops or wacky unbelievable villains here, just ancient cults, anarchists, mercenaries, hart break and pain.
We see a broken Bruce Wayne after his family are killed lost and wondering until through his pain and suffering The Batman is born. With hi-tech gadgets a practical Batsuite (that hardly changed between all three movies) and real detective skills Batman was more alive then ever to me.
Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne was outstanding playing a stuck up pompous billionaire who everyone hated to through them on the scent that he was the man behind the mask was truly breathtaking. These films seamed to have everything a fan and non fan could ask for from a Batman movie. So why change?

2016- Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
To answer my own question, because DC wanted Batmen to be part of a bigger world. A world where all DC characters could come together as one- Welcome The Justice League of America.
So how do you top the last Batman? Like each new director did, change the Batman to who he thought Batman was! Director Zack Snyder already had his finger in the DC pie with his interpretation of Superman in the Man of Steal movie so who better to give the reins to then him. Ben Affleck cast as Batman upset a lot of people at first but let him give it a go he has proved himself to be a great actor and lest see what he can do with Batman.

Affleck gave us a very dark Batman, one that killed to get what he wants, tortured criminals for answers, and wasn't scared to take on a god. I dont think we have seen a Batman like this yet. A violent Batman that's like Daredevil and The Punisher mashed into one Bat like person. Also his Bruce Wayne seams to have a fire and passion unlike any Bruce before him ready to law brake as Bruce Wayne to get answers!

Although very different to other Batman performances Affleck's Batman had something about him that i loved. He reminded me of artiest Frank Miller's Batman from the comics. A hard character that doesn't stop until the job is done or hes dead.
So yes after the lose of Bale's Batman it looks like the Batman fan can breath easy knowing the character is in safe hands with Affleck.
I look froward to seeing more of Batman in Suicide Squad this year and fingers crossed for a stand alone Batman movie.

So after all this its changed my opinion on who is Batman. Batman is who ever you want him to be! For me Bale is the perfect Batman but Keaton and Affleck where very close and all three Batman's where so different.
So who is your Batman?
