Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have both stated that that they will not be playing Iron Man and Captain America much longer. Even if they didn't announce this, both the Steve Rogers and Tony Stark characters will have to be rebooted for new movies at some point in the future. It's inevitable. The same can be said for Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. The good thing about the Ant-Man character is it doesn't stop with Hank Pym and Scott Lang. There's a lesser-known Ant-Man that happens to be my favorite. His name is Eric O'Grady. Not only is he a great character, he's one of the worst people in comic books.
Nowadays, people tend to root for the bad guy on television shows more than they do the good guy at times. Walter White from Breaking Bad, Tony Soprano from The Sopranos and Vic Mackey from The Shield are examples of characters who broke ground for bad guys to be the stars of TV shows. They were murderers, thieves, cheaters, and sometimes absolutely immoral people. Eric O'Grady may not be a killer, but even Vic Mackey could look at some of the things that O'Grady has done and say "Well, at least I'm not that bad". O'Grady's terrible personality would make for great television. But, who is Eric O'Grady and what makes him so terrible?
Who is Eric O'Grady?
Eric O'Grady is a former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and not one of the cool ones. There are no jet packs and super cool gadgets for Eric. At the time, he wasn't disciplined enough to be a field agent. Plus, he was content staying exactly where he was by doing the bare minimum (or less) and floating under the radar so he doesn't get noticed. When O'Grady wasn't on monitor duty, he was trying to find ways to have sex with some of the other agents and being a complete creep and jerk to everyone he encountered. While being a creep doesn't make you a bad person, telling your best friend’s girlfriend that he's cheating on her and that he's not really on a mission he's with another woman does make you a bad person. And trying to have sex with her on his grave the night after he was buried makes you deplorable. Eric O’Grady did that because he doesn't care about anybody but himself.
Why this would make for a good show:
Eric O'Grady is the type of person that is almost impossible to like. He lies, cheats, steals, and for a while he had no remorse for any of the horrible things he did. Viewers would watch in hopes that karma would get Eric O'Grady and he would finally get what's coming to him. Once it happens, we'd keep watching to see him pick himself back up or see if he keeps on digging the hole he continuously buries himself in.
O'Grady is an unlikable jerk wad that would make for a very Don't trust the B**** in Apt 23 kind of character. Funny, annoying, easy to hate, but for some reason you like him. Sure, you hate him and hope for bad things to happen to him, but we wouldn't stop watching. Even if Eric O'Grady isn't used as Ant-Man, he could just be an annoying and skeevy S.H.I.E.L.D. employee that constantly finds himself trying to not get caught for the illegal things he does. Either way, Eric O'Grady should certainly make his way to Netflix or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
These are only a few things that Eric O'Grady has done. For a while, Eric would take two step forward and then take four steps back. But the good thing is that there were events in his life that caused Eric to grow up a bit. Even after Eric became a better, he was still a bit of a jack-ass. But, hey, nobody's perfect.
Do you like O'Grady? Does he deserve his own show? Let me know in the comments.
