A while ago Fox announced a slated list of movies based off the X-Men franchise, and one of these titles was New Mutants. Well New Mutants appears to be much closer to production than previous thought. The first cast member for the movie has been announced and that is, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane.
Maisie Williams is well known for her roles both on Game of Thrones and Doctor Who, but this will see her entering a big blockbuster of a movie. She has been cast to play the Scottish mutant Rahne Sinclair who has the mutant ability to turn into a werewolf like creature.
The New Mutants film will focus more on the students from the X-Men comics, with them training to become full X-Men. Many do remain as New Mutants as they find their place within that team, but the series has seen many diverse characters join the roster. Here are some likely candidates on who could be joining Wolfsbane in the upcoming movie.
Samuel Zachary "Sam" Guthrie is a popular mutant from the comics, who has been seen in a couple of X-Men cartoon series before, but never in a movie. He basically is what his codename suggests. He has a jet propulsion ability that allows him to travel at extreme speeds which even creates an impenetrable "blast field" while in flight. He is also most likely to lead a team of New Mutants.
While many of you will be aware of who Colossus is in the X-Men universe, you may not be aware he has a younger sister. Illyana Nikolaevna Alexandria Rasputin is a mutant with abilities delving more into the magic arts. With the abilities of inter-dimensional teleportation, magic, mystic armor and a mystic Soulsword she gives Fox a magical option without resorting to Scarlet Witch, as she is present in Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
Warlock is not of Earth, he is part of the Technarchy, a race of mechanical organisms that survive by infecting living creatures with the "techno-organic" transmode virus, before draining the life energy, "lifeglow", of the infected organism. His body is composed of a techno-organic material that can be reshaped at will; can infect organic beings and technology with an alien virus that transforms the target into a techno-organic being like himself; and can drain the life force of other techno-organic beings for sustenance, killing them. Unlike others of his aggressive and warlike race, Warlock has compassion. He is a likely candidate to be what pulls the team together in the first movie as they fight back his own race from infecting all of Earth.
A wild child in every sense of the word is Tabitha Smith, aka Boom Boom. She has the ability to creates variably-sized orbs of pure psionic energy that explode with concussive and destructive force, which she uses for various reasons including unblocking the sink. The girl loves a bit or rebellion and can challenge authority at times.
Rictor has the ability to release seismic energy through his fingertips, using it to create earthquakes, shockwaves or otherwise transport earth matter. While his power is cool, the bonus for Fox is Rictor is gay. If Fox decided they wanted to beat both Marvel and DC to portray an LGBT superhero, Rictor gives them a clear shot.
Along with these options, there is also the chance we could see two characters return from X-Men: Days of Futures Past. Blink and Warpath.
Both characters have been members of New Mutants, and we know Fan BingBing has been contracted for another two X-Men movies. Both actors are young enough to blend in with a cast of teenage mutants, which is a plus for Fox.
Who would you like to see join the New Mutants cast, and who do you think should play them?
