Few shows have managed to release so few episodes at such great intervals, while keeping their fanbase totally and irremediably hooked like the BBC's Sherlock. Ever since the first season came out in 2010, only three sets of three episodes have graced our screens and we've been feverishly asking for more, especially when we realized that it's 2016 and that, judging from the two-year gap between the previous seasons, there should be a Season 4 right about now.
But the release of a Christmas special in January showed that we might have to wait a little longer for a full season. So, when is it coming, exactly?
Shooting Of Season 4 Has Started!
Forever excluding the possibility of this new season getting discarded because of the main actors' tight schedules, series creator Mark Gatiss confirmed that Season 4 started filming on April 4. He teased the show while at the London Theatre Olivier, where he picked up an award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the Three Days In The Country play.
Deeming the new season "bittersweet," he also said that it could be released in early 2017. Seeing as Seasons 2 and 3 were released around Christmas, we can bet on January 2017. I'm going to have to mark it in my calendar. Actually, I'm going to buy a 2017 calendar just for that.
'It's Going To Be Bloody Frightening'
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, co-creator of the series Steven Moffat announced the new season would be dark, to say the least:
"It's consequences. Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways — obviously it's great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that — but there's a sense of… things… coming back to bite you. It's not a safe, sensible way to live. It's hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it's going to be bloody frightening."
And although there's little chance anyone was expecting an easy ride, it looks like we're going to have to brace ourselves, because it's about to get emotional in here.
"We’re certainly going to put them through the mill. It’s going to be more of an emotional upheaval. Hopefully enjoyable and fun, all the things Sherlock must always be. It will be tough at times. Maybe that’s the word? A tougher series."
So What Can We Expect?
There's been more than one rumor about what will make the show become so tough, but one that particularly got to me was the theory suggesting Mary's death. Moffat did state the following:
"It's great that he's back and John's got a wife and Sherlock likes her and isn't it adorable, and then it all goes to hell. Remember where we left them."
We should also get to see more villains, since in Moffat's own words, "the story of Sherlock Holmes isn’t Sherlock versus a criminal mastermind. It just isn't."
Watch This Amazing, Fan-Made Teaser For Season 4
If the news of Season 4 getting slightly closer has got you craving new material as desperately as a bored Sherlock, watch the teaser above. Exploiting the chilling "Miss Me?" message left by Moriarty at the end of Season 3, this fan-made video is so good it should seriously be considered for the official teasing campaign when it starts.
Kudos to you, John Smith, for reawakening our deep yearning for Sherlock.
