"Jack Bauer's still out there."
So says the hero who plays him, Kiefer Sutherland. In an interview published yesterday with Rolling Stone, Sutherland teased the possibility of his famous character returning in the forthcoming series 24: Legacy. Are you excited?
The 49-year-old Golden Globe-winning actor did not rule out a future reprisal of the role in the new series alongside the new cast. He has played the role throughout the original 24 series since 2001 to astronomical critical acclaim, but is only listed as a producer for the planned 12 episodes of Legacy. When talking about quitting the series as an actor, Sutherland said:
"I've said that twice and have been wrong, so I won't say that again. ['24: Legacy' is] a phenomenal script, I think it's going to be incredibly liberating for the writers to not have to figure out one more bad day for Jack Bauer. They get to write for new characters."
Outside of 24, Sutherland will appear in the new ABC series Designated Survivor as Tom Kirkman, a man thrust unexpectedly into the position of US president. He has also recently branched out into a country music with his debut album Down in a Hole.
What The Hell Is '24: Legacy'?
Fox TV series 24: Legacy is a spinoff of 24. It remains in the same universe as its predecessor, but with different leads — war hero Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins) and former Counter Terrorism Unit head Rebecca Ingram (Miranda Otto). No actor from the original is yet confirmed to be in the new series. Fox said via a press release in January:
The pilot will feature an all-new cast of characters and retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format.
Let's hope it's not all-new, all the time.
