There are a ton of movie franchises that we as movie lovers can never truly let go of. Movies that will not only be in our hearts until the end of time (and possibly longer), but that we also never, ever want to see end!

Oddly enough, or perhaps not oddly at all, a lot of these beloved franchises are space epics. Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, etc. These and many other film franchises have become the favorites of many.

Though perhaps not as widely known as the previously mentioned beloved films, Galaxy Quest has developed a large fan following over the years. Oh, and would you look at that, it is also a space movie!

Not only is it a space movie, but Galaxy Quest is the ultimate space movie for any space movie fan! Revolving around a fictional TV series, Galaxy Quest stars Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver as cast members of the show who are suddenly whisked away into a real-life space adventure by alien superfans who believe their RV escapades to be real.

Full of action, comedy and a TON of awesome Star Trek references, Galaxy Quest parodies and pays homage to Star Trek and other popular space films. It quickly became a cult-hit! Which is why it shouldn't completely surprise you to hear that a sequel was reportedly in the works over at Amazon.

A sequel to Galaxy Quest has long been requested by fans of the original film. Rumors of a potential Galaxy Quest 2 have been around since the premiere of the first film in 1999. They started to gain major attention in 2014, when star Tim Allen mentioned a script had been written.

Fans of the movie rejoiced in their excitement over the long-awaited return of their favorite science-fiction comedy! Unfortunately, it seems that the wait is going to be a little longer, if recent news is any indication.

Speaking in a Nerdist podcast, Sam Rockwell, one of the original cast members, revealed that there were plans to do a Galaxy Quest 2. But due to recent tragic events, the sequel was cancelled.

Rockwell: “They were going to do a sequel on Amazon. We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available – he has a show – and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”

Alan Rickman, known for his roles in popular movies like Galaxy Quest, Die Hard, and the Harry Potter franchise, passed away earlier this year. On his 69th birthday, Rickman died due to pancreatic cancer.

Being such a famous actor revered by many, Rickman's passing was not taken lightly. Many fans and fellow actors expressed deep sadness when they heard about it.

Hearing that Galaxy Quest 2 is officially off the table may be sad to hear for most fans of the original. But choosing not to go ahead with the sequel, and keeping the original as one of Rickman's many legacies, is quite possibly the best way to honor the deceased actor.

Thanks for reading!
