Just like the titular character in The Mummy, the entire ensemble of Universal Monsters are being resurrected in one giant, terrifying zombie-like cinematic universe.

The original franchise ran from 1931 to 1948, and long before the likes of Marvel, Universal Studios utilised the creative platform to merge famous characters such as Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man.

The upcoming as-yet-untitled Mummy movie is the second in the rebooted universe, following on from Dracula Untold (2014). Filming began this month, and, to celebrate, let's take a look at some monstrous trivia:

1. Acting Superstar Tom Cruise Will Take The Reigns

Yup, one of the world's most famous faces will star as Tyler Colt, a US Navy Seal who initially embarks on the task of capturing terrorists in Iraqi desert-land, leading him to the cursed tomb.

2. Annabelle Wallis Will Star Alongside Him

The actress is best known for TV shows The Tudors and Peaky Blinders, as well as the horror flick Annabelle (2014).

3. Sofia Boutella Will Play The Mummy

Sofia is an actress, dancer and musician. She previously front a Nike advertising campaign as a hip hop dancer, as well as appearing in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015). She'll also have a leading role in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.

4. This'll Be The First Time A Female Has Ever Played The Mummy

5. Alex Kurtzman Will Direct

He is best known for producing and writing Transformers (2007), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and Star Trek (2009).

6. Unlike Its Predecessors, The Movie Is Set In Present Day

Earlier incarnations were set in different time periods. For example, The Scorpion King is set 5,000 years before 1999's The Mummy.

7. It'll Be Released Nine Years After The Previous Live-Action Mummy Film

The previous release was 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

'The Mummy' is set for release on 9 June 2017.
