After players led Kratos on a bloody warpath throughout both the PS2 and PS3 eras, a visually upgraded God of War game designed for the PS4 seemed like a no brainer, but we're three years into the console's lifecycle there's still no sign of the Spartan warrior.
Nerd Leaks, however, recently uncovered the password-locked portfolio of Santa Monica concept artist Finnian MacManus, whose work seems to point towards the development of a new entry in the series. Those let down by the franchise's M.I.A. status might be a little relieved by this purported God of War 4 leak, if not taken aback by its bold new creative direction.
From Athens to Alfheim
The biggest change comes in the form of the game's mythological underpinnings. Whereas the series has always taken its cues from Greek legend in the past, this new iteration appears to be inspired by Norse fables.
It seems that the vengeful Kratos will be packing his serrated blades and heading off to the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology, including Alfheim, the land of the faeries, and Vanaheimr, a vibrant area overrun by luminescent vegetation.
As with all leaks, a heavy side serving of salt should be taken with the news, although Polygon is reporting the information to be genuine. And it's not hard to see why: the concept art directly mentions Kratos by name and Cory Barlog, director of God of War 2, accidentally confirmed a new game was in the works back in 2014.
So, as it stands right now we could be in for a God of War 4 reveal during this June's E3. There's only one question on my mind: can we expect a head to head fight with the mighty Thor?
