Last year moviegoers returned to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The latest installment in the Star Wars Saga started a new adventure for the massive franchise. Now that the movie is said and done, fans will have to wait until 2017 for next chapter in this new trilogy to continue. However just because Episode VIII is 20 months away does not mean Star Wars will be taking a year off as a new adventure begins this Christmas. Following the announcement of The Force Awakens was reveal of the Star Wars Anthology films. These movie will be independent from the Saga as they would tell solo stories dealing with the vast concepts that make up the Star Wars universe. The first of these movies comes in the form of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One tells the story of a team rebels who are task to steal the plans of the Death Star. With the exception of some details, there have been little to no information on this spin-off film. However this has changed thanks to the release of the first trailer to Rogue One.

The trailer is brief (as most teaser are), but it certainly makes a statement with its action packed moments and mysterious plot points. However the thing that stood out to me was just how different this movie looks from the Saga films. There seems to be a more narrow perspective with this spin-off, and I think that is kind of vibe Rogue One should be going for. Rather then dealing with a massive story that features several perspectives, this film should have a simplistic narrative that focuses on this team of Rebels. This is not to say that Rogue One's plot cannot be complex, but the movie should try to keep the story focused on its main concept.

While this venture is quite intriguing, I believe that moviegoers should keep an open in mind with Rogue One. There has always been a sense of grandeur when it comes to Star Wars; and while Rogue One will certainly have massive cinematic moments, I do believe that this film not have the same kind of atmosphere that moviegoers are familiar with when it comes to this franchise. This could hurt the effectiveness to the movie as the spin-off could very well be off putting to audiences. I believe when it comes to Rogue One, and the other Anthology films, it would best for viewers to go into this spin-off film with an open mind.

As I stated, the first trailer to Rogue One definitely makes a statement. Not only does this spin-off look action packed, but it also shows that we could be in for a different kind of Star Wars movie. I can only hope that the effectiveness of Rogue One is strong in the force as its success will help to shape the other Star Wars Anthology films.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th.
