Once The Force Awakens came out on DVD and Blu-ray this past week, I saw only one option: spending every spare moment watching the movie again and again. However, I told a friend that I was watching the movie for the third time in two days, she seemed confused. Why would anyone find pleasure in watching a single movie so many times?
It's simple really, The Force Awakens is more than just a movie. It's an event that Star Wars fans will treasure for years to come. After a long wait, Star Wars has returned at full force, in an amazing film that not only has nostalgic value, but many epic moments that are worth watching over and over again.
Warning: This article is packed full of spoilers. Let's be honest here, we've all seen the movie by now, but just in case you missed the theater rush, I'd click away unless you want major plot points spoiled.
10. The Millenium Falcon Reveal
When the trailers first came out, fans had many familiar and exciting moments to latch onto, including Han Solo's signature starship: the Millenium Falcon. We all knew that the ship would be in the film, but none of us knew when it would show up. So when Rey and Finn happened upon it while they were running from the First Order, the theater audience roared in applause.
The scene gets even better when we see Rey maneuver the Falcon through impressive twists in turns as we see the ship in action for the first time in 30 years. If that's not a great way to start out the first part of the movie, I don't know what is.
9. Rey Manipulates A Stormtrooper
Few moments in The Force Awakens blend dramatic intensity and humor as seamlessly as the scene with Rey and Daniel Craig's stormtrooper. In the scene, Rey is being held hostage by Kylo Ren, and she decides to try her hand at her newly discovered Force abilities by convincing the stormtrooper guard to let her free.
As soon as the stormtrooper removes the restraints and leaves the cell with the door open, the moment is comically heightened when Rey adds "and you'll drop your weapon". This moment received a big laugh in theaters, and remains funny during numerous viewings.
8. The Luke Skywalker Reveal
Ah, Luke Skywalker. When it was revealed that the hero of the original trilogy was returning for the seventh installment, fans immediately started speculating what his role would be. When we finally saw him lower his hood at the end of the film, it was such an emotionally intense moment that it is worth watching over and over again.
The only reason that this moment is rated so low on the list is because it only lasts for a few seconds at the very end. Though no matter how brief, seeing Mark Hamill again with dramatic John Williams music playing in the background gave this a sure spot.
7. Han and Leia's Reunion
Imagine you are in the theater on opening night, December 18th, 2015. You are sitting in a comfortable theater seat with a bag of popcorn and hopeful whimsy deep in your heart. And on this day of all days, you see Han Solo reunited with Princess Leia. If that doesn't put butterflies in your stomach, I don't know what will.
After the battle outside Maz's cantina, we get a dramatic and emotionally uplifting reunion that even introduced C-3PO for the first time in the film! How can you get much better than that?
6. Rey's Vision
While this scene might not have the same epic or nostalgic value as the other scenes of the film, the mystery surrounding the sequence makes it a prime target for multiple viewings.
The film as a whole placed a lot of mystery around Rey's past, and when we see her vision as she finds Luke's saber, we are flooded with information. Was that Kylo Ren? Did he save her? Was he trying to hurt her? Was that Obi-Wan's voice? So many questions were left unanswered that hardcore fans and theorists will commonly flock to this scene until Episode VIII gives us some more answers.
5. "Chewie... We're Home"
Yes, they showed the scene in one of the trailers, and yes that might take a little away from the suprise of the moment, but come on. When Han and Chewie step back aboard the Millenium Falcon for the first time in decades, audiences roared in the theaters. This was the moment we finally knew that we were back to the old Star Wars movies that we all loved, so that lent a lot of weight to an already solid scene.
4. Kylo Ren's Grand Entrance
Though Kylo Ren was the high point for the Star Wars marketing team, fans of the franchise were somewhat wary when they first got wind of the new villain. After all, how can the series top a villain as legendary as Darth Vader?
Well when we see Kylo Ren storm the village in Jakku in the begininning of the film, we instantly learned that he was a force to be reckoned with. The shot of him stopping the blaster bolt in mid-air is more than enough to get us to push the rewind button.
3. Poe's Awesome Piloting Skills
The entire skirmish outside of Maz's cantina is an entertaining scene with both the Resistance and the First Order coming together in a clash of the titans, but nothing in that scene tops Poe's daredevil flying techniques.
We get to see Poe showing off his flying skills early on in the film when he breaks out with Finn, but when we see the full extent of his aviary prowess in this scene, it makes you want to just watch the scene over and over again. I have to agree with Finn here: "that's one hell of a pilot!".
2. The Final Battle
Naturally, with every Star Wars movie lies an incredible final battle. The original Star Wars had the Death Star assault, Empire Strikes Back had the Luke vs. Vader duel in Cloud City, and even The Phantom Menace topped it off with the battle with Darth Maul.
The Force Awakens delivers an amazing finale with both lead protagonists picking up Luke's old lightsaber to battle the ferocious Kylo Ren. The scenery and the choreography of the battle both add a lot to the tone of the scene, and let's not forget the epic moment where Rey uses the Force to snatch Luke's saber from Kylo Ren's clutches.
1. Han Solo's Ultimate Fate
Of course you know this heart-shattering moment had to rank high on this list. The Force Awakens made a very bold decision in killing off beloved character Han Solo, but they definitely shot the scene just right. The acting by both Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo) was amazing, and the suspense before the fatal blow made this a scene that people could not stop talking about once the credits rolled.
Out of these ten amazing scenes, there are still countless more. With the friendly chemistry between John Boyega (Finn) and Daisy Ridley (Rey), the spectacular action sequences, and the phenomenal score by John Williams, there is no limit to the enjoyment of The Force Awakens.
