After plummeting sales of Batman v Superman, I'm sure everyone is placing anything DC related under tight scrutiny, ready to unleash a barrage of hate claiming they will fail simply because they aren't Marvel. If Batman and Superman, together in one film, couldn't generate a global meltdown, then what is a random group of misfits, most of which the general public have no clue who they are, be able to do? I'll tell you exactly what they are going to do. Suicide Squad will in fact succeed where BvS failed, by bringing a fresh, completely insane, and surprisingly fun film into the DC cinematic universe fold. One of the biggest complaints about Batman v Superman was that it was darker than necessary and completely void of anything fun. It was quite literally a black hole sucking out all humor and launching it into the nether-realm alongside Superman's personality. This however will be quite the opposite, blending over-the-top action with the right amount of funny to make you enjoy watching this film.
Okay, so the film will have humor and a lighter vibe than BvS, but that doesn't directly equate to feature film success, so what else can attribute to blockbuster status? I have two shining reasons that are going to hit like a double-backhand to the bridge of the nose...Harley Quinn and The Joker.
Let me start out by saying that Jared Leto looks completely insane and from everything I've read thus far about his performance, he has placed himself so deep into the role it's almost scary. When someone puts that much passion into a role it's almost impossible to fail. And from the looks of it, he's blending everything we loved about Jack Nicholson's Joker and Heath Ledger's, all while adding his own spin to it. I believe he will make his predecessors proud. With that being said, almost every person alive is familiar with The Joker in some form or another and after Ledger's career defining performance as the Clown Prince, many have said that no one would be able to fill those shoes again. So the simple fact that people are going to want to see how well he plays the part will generate huge numbers to begin with. The best part of the whole thing is that it’s within a film almost completely separate from Batman. We’ve seen him fight Batman multiple times, and I know there is a brief cameo from the Dark Knight, but being part of an entirely separate film will work wonders. It gives him a unique sense of freedom, not smothered under the guidelines of a Batman film, allowing him to showcase different sides of the Joker that isn’t just playing a game of cat and mouse with the caped-crusader. Introducing him in non-Batman related film might just be one of the smartest moves DC has made thus far. It also lends a familiar face to unfamiliar territory. Rather than overwhelming the audience with a bunch of new names to learn, they at least have one character that needs no introduction to hang onto.
As awesome as The Joker may be, there is one character that is already drawing all the attention and will almost definitely steal the show, and that is Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn is a character that is equally as insane as The Joker, just as deadly, loaded with a manic sense of humor, and wickedly sexy. She's eye candy for sure, but Margot Robbie is a brilliantly talented actress that will bring a slick sense of humor to the mix, backed by high levels of insanity that will forcefully suck the viewer's eyes in her direction every single second she is on screen. In one of my most recent articles I said that one reason I believe Wonder Woman will be a huge success is because she brings a strong female character to the forefront of a male dominated genre. Harley Quinn will do just the same, bringing a powerful woman into the mix as a show stopping lead role. Of course Harley Quinn is not really the type of character you would want your daughter to emulate, but it's still a good sign seeing women starting to take center stage. Many are curious about Leto stepping in as The Joker, but it's pretty safe to say that most people running to the theaters to check out the Suicide Squad are doing so to see Margot Robbie break out into superstar status.
The remaining cast, though not as colorful as Harley and The Joker, are an off-center mix that will draw attention much like Guardians of the Galaxy did, and of course it doesn't hurt having a superstar like Will Smith as part of the group either. What's really going to help this film is its ability to break the mold focusing on villainy forced into heroic roles. People these days are becoming more accustomed to rooting for the villains and anti-heroes, as proven by the success of movies like Deadpool and TV shows like Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. Suicide Squad will be no different in proving during modern times, the bad guys reign supreme.
Oh and did I mention that there is a Ben Affleck/Batman cameo? Ben Affleck's more comic-centered version of Batman won most of the praise coming from BvS with many touting him to be the "Best" Batman thus far. So a cameo, no matter how brief, will draw attention, then add an in an encounter with Leto's Joker and Harley Quinn and you have the makings of a minor, yet EPIC appearance that will leave fans salivating for the arrival of the next Batman solo project.
If this trailer doesn't get you hyped, then you're either 95 or you think the viewing of grass growing makes for ground-breaking cinema.
