[Kong: Skull Island](tag:1139115) is an upcoming reboot of King Kong, which if I'm being honest, I wasn't looking forward to, until I saw the behind the scenes video that blew my mind! It gives you a glimpse of what this film is and what's to come. After seeing that, I was hooked.
I started to research the film more, trying to learn as much as I could and these are the four things that I think should get you excited for Kong: Skull Island.
The cast to this film is ridiculously good!
- Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers)
- Brie Larson (The Spectacular Now)
- Toby Kebbell (War Horse)
- Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton)
- Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton)
- John C. Reilly (Step Brothers)
- John Goodman (Monsters, Inc.)
- Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction)
This film has some of the biggest names in the film industry at the moment, some of the best upcoming stars, and some of the best veterans there are. Unfortunately, the film did have Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons attached but they left due to scheduling conflicts. This has, however, allowed J.K. to be Commissioner Gordon for DC's Justice League Part One and the Batman solo movie!
This will be Jordan Vogt-Roberts's second feature film, which would make some people worried, but after seeing his directorial debut The Kings of Summer (an indie film I enjoyed very much), I'm not worried at all. This won the Narrative Feature Audience Award at the 2013 Dallas International Film Festival. So, Kong: Skull Island is in good hands and it will be very interesting to see what he does with the story.
It might also be worth mentioning that Vogt-Roberts has been rumored to possibly direct the Metal Gear Solid film adaptation in a few years, so we know that studios have faith in him.
This film is being shot in some of the most beautiful places on the planet: Vietnam, Oahu (Hawaii), and Australia. It should also help that the director of photography is Larry Fong, known for 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, Super 8, Now You See Me, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. They are all beautifully shot and films like Sucker Punch and Batman v Superman in particular give me faith that this team knows how to shoot CGI spectacles (granted it is up to the CGI department for the effects!).
Godzilla vs. Kong
The daddy of the versus has always been King Kong vs. Godzilla and it IS happening, believe it or not. Kong: Skull Island is a prequel to Godzilla (2014), set in the 1970s around the time of the Vietnam war. It is the second film in a literal Monster franchise building up to Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
Like I said, this is the original daddy of the versus genre and it's FINALLY happening! It will be interesting to see two giant monsters fight each other to the death — I can't wait.
