This is way late, but better late than never!
Check out our podcast here if you want to hear us talk about it:
Andy Diggle tells his brother that he was approached by Malcolm on a plan to break Darhk out of prison. Oliver and Diggle stake out the location and stop H.I.V.E.'s plan, but it turns out to be a ruse designed to let Malcolm and League followers to infiltrate the bunker and steal Darhk's idol. The team continues to track Malcolm's location, with Andy providing intel. Diggle tells Andy that the idol will not work because they removed an important piece and hid it in another location. Oliver does not trust Andy and confronts him; Diggle interrupts the interrogation and sides with his brother. Darhk orchestrates a prison riot and the team sets out to stop him. Andy joins to prove his loyalty to the team. Thea confronts her father, but is defeated by him when she can not bring herself to kill him. They clear out most of the inmate and close in on Darhk. Andy turns on them and gives Darhk the missing piece to his idol. With his powers restored, Darhk stabs Laurel before escaping with several inmates. Oliver rushes her to the hospital and the rest of the team with Felicity follow. The doctors bring Laurel, who survived the attack, out of surgery to recover and the team shares a heart felt moment with her. Oliver stays behind to watch her and they talk about their relationship, with Laurel revealing she still loves him. She tells him to promise her something before the audio is cut. Moments later, she begins to seize and the doctors rush to save her. She dies and the team grieving at the loss. Lance shows up and sees Oliver, collapsing when he realizes that his daughter is gone. In flashbacks, Oliver helps the island prisoners escape and sets off a bomb to keep Reiter from leaving the tunnels.
The action scenes were straight up epic in this episode especially. The show really does the whole hand to hand combat really well so it's no surprise. Wish there was a Canary Cry in there somewhere, but oh well.
Team Arrow- Oliver said it. The team fell apart. Everyone's an emotional wreck. We're not even sure who to blame more at this point, as everyone played their part in destroying this team. We've already bashed Olicity enough, so we will just say all of this sucks. Team Arrow will never be the same again. When they all gathered around Laurel near the end telling her how much they all loved her and how much she loved them. Got the tears coming down like waterfalls this scene did. Why did Oliver have to ruin the "We love you" train though?
Team Arrow and Team Darhk- Damien delivered the final blow to the already battered team. This guy knows who each of them are and it's going to be hell. Andy revealed his loyalty to Darhk and Malcolm is only siding with him to protect him and Thea from Genesis. We've got to say we have no idea how Team Arrow is going to take down Team Darhk without some extra fire power.
Oliver and Laurel- They had a whole lot of Canary & Green Arrow scenes, that have been long over due. We've heard from the producers and Stephen Amell in the past that Lauliver wasn't going to be end game, but how could they do this to us. To them. They totally Batmaned the crap out of this relationship. Okay they didn't necessarily need to be together, anytime soon at least, but did they have to kill her off? You can not have Green Arrow without Black Canary. Period. Their final scene was all the feels and she told Oliver how much she still loved him. The only problem was that they could have done without mentioning Felicity. She made him promise some before she "died", but we will talk about that more down below. Even though the scene was beautiful, she deserved so much more than that.
Oliver and Diggle- The brothers were sort of at each others throats here. Diggle thought that Andy had reformed and threatened to shoot Oliver when he saw him interrogating Andy. Turned out that Oliver was right and Diggle was heart broken. That everything could have been avoided had he listened to him. Oliver didn't hold it against him though, that he was just trying to believe in Andy.
Oliver and Andy- Oliver wasn't keen on Andy helping out and put the facts together right away. Everything seemed to be going too well on their missions and I guess that was enough for him to torture Andy for answers. This is one of the times where Oliver could tell everyone "I told you so."
Oliver and Thea- Even with the weight on his shoulders,he tried hard to make sure that Thea wouldn't do something she would regret or get killed over. Hell, he has even more reasons to put the guy down, but he hasn't.
Laurel and Lance- He tried to talk her out of taking the job as the DA for Ruve. Sadly, that would be the last time he would see his daughter. Over the last few episodes, he was the one everyone though would meet their end by Darhk, but no it was her. The silence in that moment and him sinking to the ground realizing that Laurel was gone, was heartbreaking. Everything he's done was to make sure this didn't happen to his kids, but look what happened. Guy can't catch a damn break. Lance has now lost everything. We don't even want to know how Sara is going to take the news of her dying.
Diggle and Andy- We thought he changed, but no. He single-highhandedly picked the team apart and led his brother on. As an older brother we do anything to protect our younger siblings. Diggle wasn't wrong there. The difference between my bother and his, is that his is a former war criminal and had ties to someone like Damien Darhk. He never came back to Diggle it was all a ruse. With that being said, we're probably going to see the two duke it out, and Diggle will probably kill him.
Thea and Malcolm- She calls him by his name. He is no longer dad to her. They clashed twice this episode and for a guy missing a hand, he's still got it. He has got to stop using that excuse of trying to protect her, for his actions. Dude is messed in the head. You don't beat the crap out of your kid like that and tell them you love them. Thea had a few chances to kill him, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it. She may have to make the hard choice towards the end of the season.
What's To Come/Theories:
So we've got a few weeks break before the show comes back and they left us with the absolute worst feeling. Yes there have been interviews confirming that Laurel has indeed left the show, but we are still hoping that she didn't really die. She did ask Oliver to promise her something, but the audio was muted, just before she died. When was the last time this team faked a death to save one of their own. Roy Harper. Remember that. Who's to say that she faked her death to get off of Darhk's radar. She then goes off on a journey to find Nyssa and train with her. Then comes back just in time to stomp the crap out of Damien when the time comes. Yes that would be crazy and unlikely but we can dream. Plus it's comic book world and nobody ever really dies. We will be seeing her Earth 2 metahuman counterpart, Black Siren, on The Flash. If anything they should do a whole reinventing of the character which will be closer to the one in the comics. We will also see her in some flashbacks in the coming episodes of Arrow. This better not have been some unnecessary death to push forward the Olicity story. That needs to stay done. It feels weird because you can't really have Green Arrow without the Black Canary. What in the world were the writers thinking. The only way we see this as a way to creatively push the story is if the do something like what was said above. Being down a team member and Damien back with his powers, Team Arrow's efforts have seemingly been for nothing. Then to add to the top of that there is Genesis and apparently it scares the shit out of Malcolm so there's that. Everyone is obviously going to be handling it their own way and Diggle seems to have finally snapped. In the next episode we see him cracking Mrs. Darhk in the head. There is absolutely no hope right now.
Wow where to start with this one. Can't say we hated the episode, but there we're a few problems with it. Like some others have said, this is the one time where we really want this all to be a cop out. That Laurel Lance the ADA is dead but Black Canary would rise. If this was her actual death well, that was not the best way to honor the character at all. She really came to on her own this season especially, as the Black Canary. In honor of her character we give this episode 10 Canary Cries out of 10. What did you thinking about Laurel's "death" and the episode as a whole? Leave it in the comments below, we'd love to ready them!
