So we have all seen Harry Potter. The Harry Potter movies are great. The are original, creative, fun but most importantly they are financially successful. After Harry Potter Hollywood saw that potential profit they could be making and started pumping out YA movies left and right. Now we got all these movies that try and emulate Harry Potter in one way or another.

There is a trend in Hollywood and the is Sci-Fi, Apocalypse, teen movies and they all have a love triangle. It has reached the end of the road. There was simply just to many of them and they where all the same. Teens being put in a poorly written scenario where they have to fight to survive and the villains are evil adults dressed in white. The love triangle. Why does there always have to be a love triangle? The need to pick teams it's like it's a sport. None of the characters are fleshed out for anyone to care. The movies felt like they are made by studio executives and not artists. They felt like products, not films and audiences got tired.

The only decent franchise after Harry Potter was The Hunger Games and now that it's over people have moved on. Allegiant being a box office failure was the final nail in the coffin. Not even the actors care about the movies. All of them have this look on there face like it's a chore and they can't wait till it's over. They all have better projects to do and this one is just another paycheck. I'm sure Chloë Grace Moretz did not want to do The 5th Wave but her agent was like no all the young starlets are attached to a YA franchise and you don't have one, so they dug our the most random, most backwards screenplay adaptation at the bottom of the rubbish bin. Ohh and you can't forget to drag down Nick Robinson with you. I can tell you now that there is not going to be a 6th Wave.

So whats in it for the future of YA movies? Well you can breath a sigh of relief as Ascendant and the next Maze Runner movie dry up and fade out of existence peacefully and we are not going to have any YA sci-fi post apocalypse movies for a while. All the talented young actors and actresses in those movies are going to move on to other better projects. However if Hollywood wants to continue milking this for what it's worth the has to be a massive change. Here is just some of the things you have to do:

  • No sci-Fi, post apocalypse or both.
  • No love triangle.
  • The characters have to be well written and fleshed out.
  • Have interesting themes, ideas and something to think about after the movie is over.
  • No blood sports.
  • No chosen one nonsense.
  • Be a trend setter and not trend follower.
  • Hire a good director with a vision.

Of coarse the second option benefits both the studios and the audience but lets not forget every good thing has an end.
