A prominent figure within the Marvel comic universe, Brock Rumlow, also known as Crossbones, is mostly known for his role in the Civil War storyline in assassinating Steve Rogers, also know as Captain America.

Rumlow entered as a student Taskmaster's school for criminals, and after a period of time, becomes a instructor at the institution. Using the name Frag, Rumlow enlisted with Albert Malik, the communist Red Skull, and was tasked with invading Arnim Zola's Switzerland hideout. It was here that Rumlow first met Johann Schmidt, the original Red Skull, and joined forces with him, now taking the name of Crossbones.

One of his first tasks for Red Skull, Rumlow was sent to observe Baron Helmut Zemo's progress in collecting the Bloodstone fragments and later obtain them. Rumlow was later forced to destroy the fragments after the entity known as Hellfire Helix used the fragments to take control of the body of Heinrich Zemo, Helmut Zemo's father.

Knowing that Red Skull would be displeased with the destruction of the Bloodstone, Rumlow came up with a plan to defeat Captain America, kidnapping Diamondback as bait. After failing to defeat Captain America, Red Skull ordered Rumlow to return back to base.

Following the disappearance of Red Skull, Rumlow assembled the Skeleton Crew, and began searching for him. Rumlow has always remained loyal to Red Skull, even after being left for dead by Magneto.

This would later change after Red Skull fires Rumlow for questioning one of his orders, and desperate to regain his old position, kidnaps Diamondback and subjects her to brutal combat training in an attempt to brainwash her. The two would return to Red Skull's mountain fortress, and Rumlow would temporary be rehired.

Rumlow would later come in contact with Cutthroat, the new leader of the Skeleton Crew, and the two would eventually come to blows, as the latter feared Rumlow would take his place as Red Skull's right hand man.

After he is imprisoned and escaped from the Raft, Rumlow became a mercenary-assassin, working for multiple organizations until being rehired by Red Skull, until the latter's assassination by the Winter Solider. Rumlow and Red Skull's daughter Synthia Schmidt began hunting down the Winter Solider's commander, Aleksander Lukin. They later come across Agent 13 and are prepared to kill her when Red Skull reappeared, who's mind was now being shared with Lukin's inside the latter's body.

During Civil War, after Captain America and his forces surrendered to Iron Man and his forces, Rumlow shoots Captain America as he leaves the Federal Courthouse, and tries to escape via helicopter, but is stopped by Falcon and the Winter Soldier.Winter Soldier beats Rumlow into unconsciousness, Falcon laters turns Rumlow into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

A new incarnation of the Serpent Squad breaks Rumlow out of custody, and during their attack of the Senate Building, Bucky Barnes, formerly known as Winter Solider, becomes the new Captain America and fights Rumlow. Bucky was later saved by Natalia Romanova, also known as Black Widow. Rumlow is later defeated and taken back into custody.

Rumlow would later return as a member of HYDRA, and fights Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, and just before Rumlow kills him, he is defeated by Misty Knight.
