Along with the epic Doctor Strange trailer drop, Marvel unveiled the poster and title for the upcoming Spider-Man solo movie. The move will be entitled Homecoming, and will presumably follow the comic arc of the same name, which features both Iron Man and Captain America. Which means we could see these Avengers' cameos in Spidey's first MCU outing.
So much for the heroes. There's already one rumor floating around about the Vulture being one of the antagonists for Homecoming, but there's a gang of villains who've waited a long time for their silver screen debut.
I speak of course of the Sinister Six, a gang of Spider-Man villains who have been courted for movie adaptation for some time now. The Vulture is a part of this gang, so how much veracity is there to this rumor? Could the Sinister Six finally get their MCU entrance?
The Vulture Picks On Spidey
This report comes to us via Devin Faraci of Birth.Movies.Death. who claims an inside source from Homecoming gave them the scoop.
"The Vulture will be in this movie. Will he be the main baddie? Will he be a villain Spidey has to defeat in an opening scene? I don't know, although old rumors that passed by my ears indicated a non-main villain role for the old bird."
The article also reported that the Spider-Man movie's title would be Homecoming, and obviously this was confirmed a few hours later.
If one part of the report is true, that doesn't necessarily mean the rest of it is. And yet, it's interesting that Faraci pinpointed the Vulture as a "non-main villain," meaning he could be a supporting antagonist, maybe part of a group. Which brings us to:
Sinister Six In 'Homecoming'?
The Sinister Six are a group of Spider-Man's most notorious and dangerous foes. The lineup has changed slightly over the years, but the core members are: Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and the Vulture, with Venom, Scorpia, Green Goblin, and other villains often joining the gang.
Back when Sony owned Spider-Man, the Sinister Six were teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with their entrance planned for a subsequent film.
Of course, this didn't happen, but fans are still eager to see the villainous brain trust on the big screen soon. But is this likely to happen in Homecoming?
While the Vulture rumor certainly seems to suggest he will appear as part of the Six, this might not make sense in the context of the film. The Sinister Six form after being foiled by Spidey many times, so with the webslinger's MCU origin, it's possible that Homecoming won't feature the Six as main antagonists
Having said that, Kevin Feige did confirm that although the MCU Peter Parker is young, he's been at the hero game for at least a few years now.
"There is a young kid already running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet."
So Homecoming could be less of an origin, more a continuation of Peter's story — as in, following the wake of Civil War Spidey ups his hero game thanks to what he learned from the Avengers. In this context, the Sinister Six would be perfect villains. It's all guesswork at this stage, but suffice to say that hopes for the Six are high, and we might get to see them sooner than we'd expected.
