With the increasingly popularity of tattoos, many people write these intimate etchings off as a mere fashion statement, but for many they are a heartfelt expression of the things they hold dearest in life.
Below are 11 celebs who prove that tattoos can be touching, tough, and tell their life stories.
1. Megan Fox
Megan Fox is most famous for her large black gothic script tattoos of quotes by Shakespeare and Nietzsche, but some of her tattoos are a lot more simple and sentimental in their meaning.
The diminutive moon and star on Fox's inner ankle are a tribute to her father because he used to read her a book as a child that had a similar emblem on the back.
2. Danny Trejo
A lot of Danny Trejo's black and grey tattoos are from his time spent in prison, but that doesn't mean he wasn't spending his time inside aching for his family.
The red heart wrapped in barbed wire is meant to represent his undying love to his wife, Debbie. He latter added script on either side of the heart with his wife's name along with his daughter Daniella's.
3. The Rock
Dwayne Johnson's Samoan tribal tattoo sleeve is brimming with significance and is dedicated to his family and spirituality. The symbols in his tattoo allude to his to'alua (wife), Dany, and his afafine (daughter) along with two eyes (O Mata E Lua) to represent his ancestors watching over him to ensure he takes the right path in life.
4. Miley Cyrus
Miley is well known for being peppered with ink, but her first tattoo was a heartfelt tribute to her friend Vanessa who died of lung disease and her grandfathers who both died of lung cancer. When asked about the tattoo, Miley explained:
"It reminds me not to take things for granted. I mean breathing — that was something none of them could do, the most basic thing. And i put it near my heart because that's where they'll always be"
Many of Miley's tattoo collection is also dedicated to her family. For example, the dreamcatcher on her ribs represents her four brothers and sisters. She also shares a heart tattoo on her finger with other close family members.
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has plenty of sentimental tattoos dedicated to the art of writing as well as her fans, but the most adorable is the simple heart with the word "Dad" across it — a permanent reminder of her love for her father. Lady Gaga also only has tattoos on the left side of her body because her dad wanted her to keep one half of her body tattoo-free.
Gaga also has a tattoo of a mouse holding a sewing needle to represent her sister Natil whose nickname is "mouse."
6. Drew Barrymore
Although she is now estranged from her mother, Drew Barrymore's tattoos are a testament to her deep affection for the woman that raised her, despite their destructive relationship. The two angels on her lower back are dedicated to her mother "Jaid" and a former boyfriend.
7. Adam Levine
Adam Levine is plastered with tattoos but not many people know about their deep significance. The dove with cherry blossoms on his arm was designed to pay tribute all of the innocent lives lost in 9/11 and the flowers above it are dedicated to his mom, Patsy.
8. Lea Michele
Lea Michele recently got a touching tattoo in memory of her late ex-boyfriend Cory Monteith and another for her beloved grandmother. Read more about them HERE.
9. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is clearly a sentimental soul — along with his now infamously altered "Winona Forever" tattoo, he also has tributes to other special women in his life etched onto his body.
His mother's name, "Betty Sue," features prominently on his left arm wrapped in a heart as a permanent tribute to the women he calls "the greatest lady in the world." He also has the name of his firstborn daughter, "Lily Rose," inscribed above his heart.
10. Paris Jackson
After turning 18, Paris Jackson chose to pay tribute to her father in the most beautiful way. She wrote:
'Queen of My Heart' in his handwriting. To everyone else he was the King of Pop. To me, well, he was the king of my heart. Thank you @dermagraphink, you're a legend
