Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's 2011 novel Ready Player One has cast a critical role: That of James Donovan Halliday, the creator of Oasis, the virtual world in which the characters of Ready Player One's future spend most of their existence.
The story follows a young kid named Wade (Tye Sheridan) who becomes embroiled in a treasure hunt that Halliday initiates upon his death, where the winner will gain control of Oasis — and Halliday's massive fortune.
Rylance is the latest in a line of casting announcements for the film that includes Sheridan, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn. Of course, busy Rylance is hot off his big Oscar win for his performance in Spielberg's Bridge of Spies, and will be starring in the director's Roald Dahl adaptation The BFG, releasing in July, and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which will film after Ready Player One.
Ready Player One is scheduled to release March 30, 2018.
