As soon as Jared Leto was cast as the Clown Prince of Crime, he hasn't stopped playing the character both on and offset. He's continued to "wow" us fans with the insane lengths he's been taking in portraying the iconic Batman villain, as well as the little bit we've seen of him in the movie trailers and scenes.
Leto had recently told E! News that he'd sent Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc) used condoms and anal beads as a means to further identify with his character.
He went on to say that he,
did a lot of things to create a dynamic, to create an element of surprise, of spontaneity, and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.
Will Smith, who's previously confirmed receiving a few disturbing gifts from Leto before, like bullets, has indicated that they've served a purpose beyond shock value.
Jared went full Joker. The rule, generally, is never go full Joker, but he really set the tone. He wasn’t playing with it, he was dead serious. As an actor, he was going in… he really jarred [us].
Margot Robbie, who's received a pet rat, whom she named, "Rat Rat," added:
I can’t even begin to tell you the things I got [from Jared]. By that point, I feel like I knew The Joker a bit, so it wasn’t as alarming, but yeah, there were many instances where I didn’t know what to expect from Jared.
Last year, Jared Leto had sent a dead hog to the crew, and his henchman, Jim Parrick (who just so happens to be playing the Joker's henchman, Jonny Frost) on random errands at all hours, like spray-painting roses black and filling backpacks with nine-inch nails.
Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller, had previously spoken to Vanity Fair about working with Jared Leto on the film, and she revealed that he's consistently given the cast “horrifying” gifts throughout filming.
He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. And that was our introduction into Jared Leto.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, told of the gitfts they've all received, saying they, “weren’t right,” but surprisingly for reasons you wouldn't expect. He went on to say that,
“If you’re going to have that kind of party, at least invite The Croc. Don’t send me your dirty leftovers, that just isn’t right… You see why he ain’t part of The Squad, right? That’s just downright selfish.
Suicide Squad will hit cinemas later this year, on August 5th.
