I only recently discovered this movie and after watching it I have to say it is one of the best horror movies of the year so far. The movies is a anthology film about all these different people who are traveling a long a desolate stretch of highway.
The movies biggest strong point is the characters. I am surprised how well the characters are written and how you actually become attached to them in a small amount of time. There is history between them and you feel it. The acting is excellent and so is the screenplay. I was also surprised that this movie had some funny moments in it. It's not a full out comedy but I did chuckle a couple times. A good way to sum up the tone of the movie would be It Follows meets The Cabin in the Woods.
The story itself is always constantly moving forward and it's not boring. The movie jumps between different types of horror sub genres. It has a house invasion and it has demonic shit. It's not really predictable and you don't know where it's going. All the stories tie in together and it's done in such a way that the story flows seamlessly. It's not tired, it's not cliched and it has something new to offer to the genre. It does not rely on jump scares and and the actual horror stuff is left unexplained which some people will like and some won't. Personally I'm all right with it. I would not mind to know some more history about the town but as it was I was OK with it.
The soundtrack is this 80's synth music which is really cool. The cinematography is very good. The only real negative I have with the movie is some unconvincing CGI. I won't go as far as saying it ruins the movie because it's not in the movie all to much. All round it's a very solid movie for horror fans, film buffs and general audiences if you haven't seen it yet I really recommend you do.
