There is no doubting Shane Black's talent: He wrote the '80s classic Lethal Weapon, applied his skill to directing with 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and wrote and directed Iron Man 3 — the tenth-highest grossing film of all time.
Black also starred in the original 1987 Predator as Rick Hawkins — a film remembered fondly as one of the most enjoyable action flicks of all time. Black was joined in the attack against the extraterrestrial titular character by action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, who portrayed Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer.
A Fresh Take On The Original Concept
Due to a pay dispute, Schwarzenegger wasn't involved in the film's sequel, Predator 2 (1990). So when the news arrived that a rebooted version of the franchise will be released in 2018, written and directed by Black, naturally one of the first questions to arise was: Will Arnie be back?
The signs are promising. In an interview with Collider, Black confirmed that he is charging ahead with the script, and the narrative could set up Schwarzenegger for the perfect return. He said:
"Barring an act of God, a safe from the sky, there’s nothing that suggests it won’t be the next thing, and I’m getting more and more excited day by day.
"Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh. I just want to find a way to make it feel fresh and that’s what we’re trying to do."
'It's Something We're Looking Into'
Black also went on to confirm the film will be set in present day, 31 years after the original. Reading between the lines, this could pave the way for machine gun wielding "Dutch" to return. This was put to to Black, who neither confirmed or denied whether Arnie would be involved. He added:
"I think it’s something we’re looking into, and as this thing evolves and takes on more of a shape, we’ll figure out how best to honor the tradition of what is really a remarkable first movie and even parts of the rest of them as well."
The original Predator, directed by John McTiernan, focuses on an elite special forces team who enter a remote jungle on a rescue mission, but end up taking on more than they bargained for in the form of an alien creature.
The film launched a splurge of spinoffs and sequels: two direct follow-up's came in the form of Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010), in addition to two crossover films, Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007).
The Predator will be released on March 2nd 2018.
