Even after over 80 hours of playtime, The Witcher 3 was a game that still managed to surprise me. And even though I've long since retired from my days as a grey, well-conditioned Witcher, the game still has a few surprises left. The latest of which comes in the form of "news" regarding one of 2015's - and possibly gaming history's - greatest female characters, Ciri.
Ciri Has Nothing To Hide
Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, child of the elder blood, descendent of Lara Dorren, heir to the Nilfgaard empire was one of the most dynamic and powerful characters in what some consider to be one of the best games of all time. But remember, The Witcher trilogy is based off of a fantasy series of novels and short stories.
In one of these many novels, Andrzej Sapkowski, the series' writer, divulges some information regarding the sexual proclivities of Ciri. It lends some fascinating insight into her character and any fan of The Witcher 3 is sure to enjoy some additional lore.
What's The Real Story Behind Ciri's Sexual Adventures?
In her younger years, an exhausted Ciri was captured by a group of bounty hunters who sought her valuable powers and wealth. She was being held along with Kayleigh, a member of a notorious gang of castaways known as The Rats. The two manage to escape their shackles and, with nowhere else to go, Ciri decides to take up with the merry band of Rats.
However, during her first night with the gang, she was approached by Kayleigh who sought to take advantage of Ciri in her shocked and depressed state. Naturally, she resisted, but the man's advances were actually thwarted by a fellow Rat, a short girl named Mistle. However, rather than leaving Ciri be after this event, Mistle then decided to take advantage of her in place of Kayleigh. Just another day in the bleak lands of The Witcher.
However, an actual relationship blossomed following this harrowing incident. Ciri took on the persona of Falka within the band of Rats and actually stayed with Mistle. The two would walk hand-in-hand, bringing up the rear of the group and she even got a tattoo of a rose on her inner thigh to match Mistle’s. Though you might say that Ciri was lonely and depressed when this relationship began, romance most certainly blossomed.
Some players like to debate whether this makes Ciri gay - some claim that she's probably bi-sexual - but the greatest thing about all of this is how it literally doesn't impact on the narrative of The Witcher 3 or Ciri's character. Whether Ciri is gay or not doesn't affect her strength, power or likability.
She's one of gaming's strongest female leads and no desire for Mistle is ever going to change that.
