The man behind Fred Jones (Scooby Doo, Where Are You?), Megatron (Transformers), Slimer (The Real Ghostbusters), Abu (Aladdin) and Hefty Smurf (The Smurfs) is going to receive a lifetime achievement award at the "43d Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards." According to emmyonline, the event will transpire on April 29th in Los Angeles, California. This will be Welker's fourth accolade after working in the industry for nearly fifty years.
He garnered first VO gig ("Friskies" dog food commercial) after a producer and his girlfriend saw his comedy act where he performed a dog and cat fighting. The girlfriend at the time was casting for Scooby Doo, Where Are You? and he initially pinned for the role of Shaggy (since he was comedic). Yet, Casey Kasem ended up being selected for Shaggy and Welker was instead cast as Fred Jones (a role he's played since 1969). Since then, he's voiced a mirage of characters for commercials, TV and films. His VO peers have regarded him as "a voice acting god."
Welker is one of the remaining veteran voice actors and this award has long been overdue. After gracing our television sets and movie theaters for decades this truly feels deserved. And the amazing fact about it is just as his characters were heard by our parents and us, our future descendants will be able to enjoy them too. Bravo Mr. Welker! You're truly a voice acting god.
