At the Tribecca Film Festival, J.J. Abrams took part in an interview hosted by Chris Rock as a result of the success of last years The Force Awakens. During the audience Q&A portion of the interview, a young fan pressed Abrams, saying "I was going to ask you J.J., who Rey's parents are." For many fans who saw the the film, this has been one of the most speculated topics surrounding the story-line of the new trilogy.

After a period of loud cheers from the audience, Abrams playfully told the fan to "get out." While Abrams did not answer the question in specific detail, he did say that "Rey's parents are...not in Episode 7." While his answer seems like throw-away response on the surface, the implications of this little piece of information are huge.

If Abrams is indeed telling the truth, then it is safe to say that Rey is not a Skywalker. Many have speculated that she could in fact be Luke's offspring or Han and Leia's daughter, but it seems like that speculation can now be put to rest. Abrams ended his response by saying "I can't possibly tell, in this moment, tell you who they are. But I'll is something that Rey thinks about to."

After hearing Abrams response, this leaves the possibilities wide open with regard to Rey's origin which could be revealed or hinted at in Episode VIII. Abrams has been known to mislead fans when it comes to speculation about characters, but it appears he has learned his lesson from the major denials he gave during Star Trek Into Darkness involving the character of Khan. If anything, fans can take this information with a grain of salt, but at least for now, it seems safe to say that Rey is not a Skywalker. Check out the video excerpt in the source link.
