Spoilers for The Dark Phoenix Saga will follow.
Could we be seeing ANOTHER Dark Phoenix Saga adaptation from Fox? Heroic Hollywood has it on good authority that Fox's next X-Men movie could revolve around the much-loved comic book arc!
Due to the events of [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](tag:203942), the story told from the original X-Men trilogy has now been wiped from existence. This means the writers have full creative freedom when it comes to future X-Men movies because let's face it, killing Scott, Jean, and Professor Xavier were some of the most ill received decisions that came out of the critically panned X-men: The Last Stand.
Speaking to IGN about the possibility of another adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga, producer Simon Kinberg had this to say;
“I think everything that hasn't been told from 'First Class' and 'Days of Future Past' is up for grabs going forward, so it would absolutely be a story we could tell in a different way.”
It certainly sounds like the studio want to tackle "The Dark Phoenix" for the second time, but how long do we have to wait to see the classic tale on our screens again? Considering Apocalypse is set in 1983, and Jean is being played by 20-year-old Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, I'd say we are at least two more films away from seeing the Phoenix on screen again.
When speaking to EW about Jean and Scott's romance in Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer certainly hinted towards the Dark Phoenix:
“And Jean she has not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.”
Well it certainly sounds as if Apocalypse will plant the seeds for Jean Grey's dark turn! Although the question remains: do we need a reboot so early on? Apocalypse, as much as it is a final bow for the McAvoy and Fassbender trilogy, is essentially the origin story of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm. If FOX are planning to introduce Jean Grey only to make her the Dark Phoenix in the next movie then the story will fall flat on it's face and here's why...
"The Dark Phoenix Saga" was an emotional roller-coaster as we witnessed one of the most beloved character destroy an entire world, face an intergalactic trial to prove her innocence and then ultimately kill herself in front of Cyclops. If FOX rush into this then the storyline won't pay off. Look what happened with Batman V Superman, they rushed into the "Death of Superman" storyline far too quickly that it felt very forced and was one of the main criticisms of the film.
If they are definitely going to adapt the storyline, I would plead that they take their time! The smart move would be to revolve a trilogy around Cyclops leading the X-men. In each movie of the trilogy plant the seeds for a future adaptation. Jean could show signs in the first movie that she has something more powerful manifesting inside her. In the second she will give into this entity, but instead of jumping the gun into the Dark Phoenix, she would simply become Phoenix (please give her the green costume). This then means that the final film can revolve around Dark Phoenix. There is no rush, the story will pay off and hopefully we will actually care about Jean and Scott by this time.
Do you think Fox should leave the beloved storyline alone? Or do you think they should give it one last shot? We will find out if they are planning to do so when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27th.
Should Fox remake 'The Dark Phoenix Saga'?
