Full disclosure: my single motivation for watching Saturn 3 was this bit of text found on wikipedia.com:
"Farrah Fawcett was also hoped to be a major draw for a teenage male audience and much of the film's promotion was based around the revealing space suits she was due to wear in the film."
Swiftly moving on.
Saturn 3 is a Sci-Fi thriller directed by Stanley Donen, King of the Hollywood musicals, starring the aforementioned Farrah Fawcett, the legendary Kirk Douglas and Harvey Keitel sporting a terrible ponytail, (Think Segal... And then it gets so much worse).
Basically this is a film that can definitely be described as... Immediately and justifiably strange and unappealing.
Or maybe not.
There is a lot to love about this film. The acting and casting is top notch, and the direction is absolutely stellar at times. The set design and art direction did so much with a fairly limited budget and should be lauded.
And then there's this:
The story is actually fairly intriguing- two scientists (and hawt disco loving lovers) live in seclusion (with the added perk of sex) on the titular Saturn 3 scientific research base, until Scary Keitel shows up with a pesky homicidal robot named Hector.
After a few twists and turns with Keitel and Douglas fighting over Fawcett's attentions and some rapey robot vibes later we get...
Holy shit this film is fucking awesome.
Of course there are certain things that seem naff and parts of the film have not aged particularly well. The age old moral questions surrounding A.I were definitely handled more competently in Kubrick's hands twelve years earlier.
Give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised.
