Lindsay Lohan has confirmed the rumors she's converting to Islam that sprung up following the publication of a paparazzi picture of her clutching a Koran last year.

However, the 29-year-old actress —who was raised Catholic — has not yet finished reading the Islamic holy text because of its considerable length. In an interview with UK newspaper The Sun published today she said:

“I’m a very spiritual person and I’m really open to learning. America has portrayed holding a Koran in such a different way to what it actually is.
“We all believe in something and at the end of the day it all ties to a god or a spiritual adviser. My sister is Buddhist but she is still interested in learning other things from me. It’s good to be open-minded.”

Lohan has been attending Arabic lessons, and has even been seen speaking the language on the street, although she drew mockery last month when she posted an Instagram with Arabic words and a translation saying "You're beautiful," when the Arabic actually read "You're a donkey." She claimed the mistranslation was intentional.

She admitted that she has not read the entire Koran yet:

“I’m not done reading it. Do you know how long that would take? It takes so long.”

Reading the Koran from start to finish can take from 30 days to a year. Readers are advised to read it a few paragraphs at a time to take time to digest its message. It is an important part of full conversion, though commitment to being Muslim forever can be gained simply by saying a short declaration of faith called the Shahada.

Lohan also revealed that she also uses a form of meditation called "tapping":

“I can hear every conversation in a room. I hear everything and I notice everything so I have to teach myself to shut my brain off.

“I used it when I did The Jonathan Ross Show because he was going down the jail route. I was getting uncomfortable so had to do it."

Tapping helps the meditator to tune out and calm themselves when they feel overwhelmed. Lohan said she found it useful to relax herself when Jonathan Ross questioned her about her 14 days in prison for drunk driving in 2010.

Celebs who have converted to Islam include Janet Jackson, Cassius Clay and Mike Tyson.

Lohan was brought up Catholic, as she comes from Irish and Italian heritage. Her great-grandfather, John L. Sullivan, was a core founder of the Long Island Pro Life Party.

When she reached the peak of her fame as a teenager she associated with Kabbalah, a school of thought originating in Judaism, through wearing a Kabbalah red string bracelet. There were rumors she was also attending Kabbalah classes.

Her closest other commitment until now had been with a near-conversion to Judaism for her former girlfriend Samantha Ronson, a DJ brought up in Masorti Judaism, whom she dated from 2008 to 2009.

Last but not least, Lohan joined Courtney Love's Buddhist chanting group in 2012. She was said to have also turned to their practices to get her through her fortnight in prison in 2010.

Time will tell whether she'll follow through with the latest venture in her spiritual explorations.
