A few months ago the highly popular actor Elizabeth Banks was announced to be Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers movie, set for release in 2017.
The actor has reached new popularity due to her roles in both the Hunger Games franchise and the Pitch Perfect films. Now she is set to go after those pesky Rangers, before they give her a headache, as Rita Repulsa. Thanks to People's Magazine we have our first look of her as the iconic Power Ranger's villain.
Many fans will be angry to the dramatically different Rita Repulsa. However Banks herself stated,
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa. We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
With Rita set to be so different in the movie, it suggests many aspects and designs of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers could be set for the same treatment. With how both Saban and Lionsgate have both stated the film is set to be aimed at a teen to young adult audience this design certainly seems to imply they were not lying.
