The upcoming Power Rangers reboot has given us our first look at the world conquering villainess Rita Repulsa played by the always amazing Elizabeth Banks and fans are rather split about the new look: some say it looks fantastic and is a logical approach to the character's design while other's consider it a betrayal to the source material. What do I think? I say that it is an awesome design though I will wait to see it on screen before I judge it completely. I am very excited to see the Power Rangers and Rita Repulsa brought to life in a new and epic way as long as the essence of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is still there. However! What sold me on the new look is a theory that came up as I started looking at her a bit closely and I read what People Magazine had to say about the character:

And quite the menacing character, no less: As Rita Repulsa, Banks is decked out in reptilian-like green getup and hair, with menacing gold talons to match.

Hmmmmmm. The idea in your head yet? Well let's take a look at what Elizabeth Banks herself had to say,

"It's definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa." She says to PEOPLE about the look, "We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers."

Now why exactly would they make Rita Repulsa green and gold with a reptilian theme? How could this look possibly connect her to the Rangers? Well wasn't there someone else who just so happened to have that exact color scheme and was associated with a reptile-like creature? That's right I'm referring to Tommy: the Green Ranger!

Most fans of the original show would probably remember that the Green Ranger was originally an evil Ranger created by Rita Repulsa before he became the most beloved member of the team. Perhaps this change in Rita Repulsa's design is to give a reason why Rita creates a Ranger with these specific colors: maybe she's vain so she created Tommy in her own image? Well we are just going to have to watch the movie and find out. I wasn't the first one to think of this, Andre Meadows or Andre "Black Nerd" on YouTube made a video about this.

So what do you think? Could this theory about Rita Repulsa's look being a subtle hint of the Green Ranger appearance be true or is this all just a cooky idea? Let me know in the comments! Meanwhile.... It's Morphin' Time! Dragon Zord! Go, Go, Power Rangers!
