April 20, 2016 is a day that will live in infamy; the day that ushered in the end of one of the greatest eras in video game history. On this date Microsoft announced that they would be discontinuing production of the iconic Xbox 360.
The console that shipped over 86 million units is by far the corporation's biggest selling console and will be a tough act to follow for the Xbox One. The Xbox 360 holds within it a myriad of memories for all us gamers. The console that spanned a decade hosted some of the most revolutionary titles in gaming history. The console was a technological dream that allowed developers to expand the depth of their vision and produce some of the world best and most iconic gaming experiences.
There are so many memories, so many pivotal moments that came to fruition on this brilliant console, that we decided to put together a gaming homage piece that we can all add to. With over 900 titles to choose from this has not been an easy task — the Xbox 360 has one of the most comprehensive game libraries out there, which makes me think we took this machine for granted a little.
Anyway, here we go — in memoriam Xbox 360 — we will never forget.
10. GTA 5
Grand Theft Auto 5 is still to this day breaking new records and pushing all new boundaries. The sheer size of GTA V was an astounding achievement for the Xbox 360. Not only was it one of the biggest games we had seen, but the graphical quality of the final product was breathtaking. This is, of course, looking past the excellent narrative, character depiction, and pioneering mechanics. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a prime example of what the Xbox 360 was capable of.
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Still a fan favorite to this day, Black Ops 2 still has over 12 million active players. This game took the best of what Call of Duty had to offer and remade it into an all new entity that stands alone as one of the best first person shooters of all time. I still play this game on the Xbox 360, all of my friends still play this game on the Xbox 360. What a machine!
8. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Considered one of, if not, the best of the Arkham games. Batman: Arkham Asylum was a butt-kicking epic that introduced gamers to an all new style of gameplay. The revolutionary combat mechanic and enthralling narrative sucked players into the villain-ridden streets of Gotham city. Whether you were a Batman fan or not didn’t matter in Arkham Asylum, as the gameplay was just so damn good.
7. Portal 2
The perfect mix of action and adventure, it’s head scratching and puzzle solving mixed in with a hilarious narrative was just part of why I loved this game. It was a novel and unforgettable title that had the ability to stimulate mind, body, and soul. Valve's near-perfect design combined with a level of character depth that encouraged the player to feel for the individual personalities set within Portal 2. The fact that I used to live in a house called Wheatley Cottage had no influencing factor — although it was pretty cool.
6. Battlefield 3
The title that made the world sit up and notice Battlefield again. Still considered to be the best in the series, Battlefield 3 brought the reality of war to the Xbox 360. With huge maps and giant multiplayer lobbies, Battlefield 3 paved the way for the large-scale online multiplayer shooters we have today. Of course, the real home for a game like Battlefield will always be on the PC, but the game didn’t just get by on the 360 — it soared. A magnificent game and another incredible accomplishment for the Xbox 360.
5. Mass Effect series
An unforgettable series that began its life on the Xbox 360. Here we have another example of a game that achieved worldwide notoriety from its humble beginnings on the Xbox 360. One of the best narratives that we ever saw on the Xbox 360 — the ongoing saga that linked between games was revolutionary. Solid gameplay mechanic that has had no real reason to be altered over the years. Well done Xbox 360.
4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The tale of an absolute legend — an iconic adventure that was entirely possible with the power of Xbox 360. Skyrim on the Xbox 360 allowed us to lose ourselves in a level of fantasy that had previously been unobtainable on a console. We can also thank the console for bringing such an incredible title into the mainstream.
Bioshock holds within it one of the best stories the Xbox 360 has to offer. It tells an adult story that touches on real-world emotions and if players really pay attention to what is going on, you can learn a thing or two about humanity. Depicted in an utterly unique way, Bioshock will go down in history as one of the best and most diverse gaming experiences available on the Xbox 360.
2. Red Dead Redemption
A family man with a kick-ass attitude, John Marston is not your average Wild West gunslinger — he is a man with morals and a conscience. Fighting for the love and protection of his family is one of the most endearing things ever and one of the main reasons that the game was so universally adored.
The game was diverse, interactive, immersive, and addictive — the list goes on. Absolutely one of the best games to ever grace the Xbox 360. Are you ready for a Red Dead 2?
1. Modern Warfare Series
With great power comes great responsibility. Call of Duty is without a doubt one the biggest names in the business. It is clear that across the board Call of Duty is still the No. 1 name when it comes to online shooters and this is pretty much where it all started. The Modern Warfare series re-imagined the genre with revolutionary mechanics and multiplayer innovations that set the online multiplayer world on fire.
Multiplayer aside, the games hosted the best narratives we have seen in any other Call of Duty game that has followed. In my personal opinion the Modern Warfare series will never be bettered, and I would be very happy with if this year’s Call of Duty was a remake of the Modern Warfare series — as an experiment. I bet that this would sell more units than another futuristic set title.
