Superman is arguably the most iconic superhero of all time. Whether you're five or 80 years old you more than likely know who the character is. He's such a popular character with a huge place in the mainstream media, and has had it for a long time. One way he became so popularized was his appearance in live-action settings. The most notable being the run of Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.

Many saw him and still see him as a perfect casting choice for the character. While you may not realize it, casting for these types of characters is a nightmare, and there's always extensive searches to find possible actors for the role. In fact there were over 200 actors he had to beat out for the it. So I've compiled a list of the ten most interesting choices who almost donned the iconic tights.

1. Sylvester Stallone

Starting off on an interesting note, yes Stallone was at one point considered for the iconic role. However one big reason he didn't get it, was because he was seen as being "too Italian". I guess since Superman was an American hero, they wanted someone who looked and fit that criteria more.

2. Muhammad Ali

A choice that was thought up by producer Ilya Salkind, Muhammad Ali was a prime choice due to his popularity as a boxer during that time. Funny enough, Muhammad Ali actually fought Superman in the comics in "Superman vs Muhammad Ali."

3. Al Pacino

While he didn't get to put on the iconic tights, he went on to star in classics like The Godfather and Scarface. So i wouldn't feel too bad about him losing out.

4. Elton John

You heard me right. The English flamboyant singer/songwriter himself was once thought up as a potential candidate for the role. Would it have worked out? Who knows. All I do know is that would've been one fabulous Superman.

5. Charles Bronson

Wild western star Charles Bronson was considered, but lost out due to the fact that he was said to be "too earthy" looking. Which I can see. Not trying to be rude, but it looks like he had just climbed out the center of the earth.

6. Lyle Waggoner

Lyle Waggoner was another candidate, who coincidentally enough played another DC character prior. That being Wonder Woman's love interest in the T.V. series as Steve Trevor.

7. Bruce Jenner

Bruce Jenner (who now goes by Caitlyn Jenner) was in the running to play the character. But dropped out of the race, so he could star in The Village People movie, Can't Stop the Music.

8. Patrick Wayne

Son of famous western actor John Wayne, Patrick Wayne was another of the contenders. Some say he lost the role due too his fame of already being a movie star, and being the son of a well known and loved actor. I'm not too sure on though, so don't quote me on that.

9. Nick Nolte

A front-runner in race, Nick Nolte very nearly secured the role before losing out to Reeve. For some strange reason though, he wanted to play the character of Superman as a schizophrenic. Don't ask me because I don't know, it's just what the man wanted.

10. Arnold Schwarzenegger

While he wasn't approached for the role, Arnold started a large trend among actors and superhero movies nowadays. He campaigned really hard for the role, hoping to at the very least get an audition. Unfortunately that never panned out for him.

There you have it, ten actors who were almost cast as Superman in 1978 instead of Christopher Reeve. Don't get me wrong, there are more. In fact around 200 more. These were just the ten I found the most interesting share. And I do not have the time nor the drive to list them out. Tell me though, could you see any of the men above as Superman? Also, which choice surprised you the most? Feel free to comment below, and stay tuned for my next article, "Ten Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Superman (2006 Edition)". Until then, take care.

Which choice from above would you like to have seen as Superman?
