The recent casting announcement of Spider-Man alum JK Simmons portraying Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder's Justice League created a fair amount of buzz around Hollywood. While everyone is excited about the addition, we don't know anything about his role. Does he still hate Batman? Will he be a supporting player? How much screen-time will he have? Turns out, we may not get to know anything until Justice League; Part Two arrives in 2019!
The Oscar winner recently revealed that he has a very small role in the film! Speaking to DP/30, Simmons stated;
“I don’t get started on that until June, and my part in the first one is very small.
There you have it. It looks like Gordon will have nothing more than a cameo appearance at best! What role he will play in the film is still left to the imagination.
While he will play a small role in Justice League, Simmons does go on to allude that he will reprise his role in Ben Affleck's solo Batman movie, adding;
I'm going into a thing that hopefully will be 2, 3, 4 maybe more movies for me, and my part in the first one is very small.
The Whiplash star was heavily tipped to reprise his role as J Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and there were rumours of him reportedly up for playing both roles. That seems to be debunked as he looks to have made a permanent move to DC as he is hopeful to carry his role past the two Justice League movies.
As for what type of Gordon he will be portraying, Simmons did indirectly hint towards a classic take of the character. Following up his earlier comments, the Spider-Man star said;
We know his whole back story, based on the comic book. So, I'm just gonna finish doing my research on that.
Gordon's back story based on the comic book? There aren't a lot of comics that show off his back story, but the first that comes to mind is Year One. While this would be great to see on screen, it wouldn't add up unless the solo Batman movie is in fact a prequel.
It is more than likely that we will see a Gordon based off of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. This would add up with the current timeline as we have an ageing Batman who has been active for around 20 years. We could see a retired, or soon to retire, Gordon helping Batman with one final case? Maybe it could be a swansong film for Gordon, or maybe he started being a detective around the same time as Bruce became Batman? Would keep them at around 40/50 and could mean a few more movies in the line for Simmons and Affleck.
Whatever role Gordon plays in Justice League, the future of the DCEU looks bright with JK Simmons on board!
