Ever scroll through Netflix aimlessly? Or even Hulu? Looking for that perfect show? Or for that perfect rom-com to sweep you off your feet? With “Once Upon A Time” your search will be over. This intriguing masterpiece has been a sensation, a hit if you will, to all fairy tale fans across the globe. It has everything viewers ever dream of, intriguing romance, exceptional humor, likeable evil, and even surprising twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat, maybe even falling off. With “Once Upon A Time” you can make your old time fairytale stories become a modern reality.
In all honesty, the plot of “Once Upon A Time” is a little hard to describe or write out on paper. The complexity, however, is the very thing that makes it so interesting and grasping. Just to give a hint of what is in store.
The premiere starts with Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) rushing and searching through the forest for his beloved Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). As he comes to find her, as the prince does in all happy endings, he sees that she is seemingly dead, but he remembers the promise that true loves kiss can break any spell. Trusting in that knowledge, he leans over to kiss the elegant Snow White princess. As we all have seen in the 1937 Walt Disney cartoon production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, as Snow White is surrounded by her seven good friends and upon her throne of a coffin, she is awakened by true loves kiss and opens her eyes to see her brave and noble Prince Charming standing there by her side.
As all fairy tales end, the next scene shows Snow White and Prince Charming being happily wedded, but remember this is no fairy tale, this was just the beginning of reality. As they say their vows, the beautiful, yet evil, power seeking, heartless Black Queen (Lara Parilla) ruins the party. She exclaims in her resentment, “I will destroy your happiness if it is the last thing I do” and magically vanishes out of the room with no trace left behind. Charming, as always, stands tall and brave and comforts Snow White with these words, “it will all be okay”. But will it? Or does the black queen have revenge to settle?
There is a need for a hero. The role has been prophesied to be given to Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison._ Emma resides in Boston where she celebrates her 28th birthday. Alone in her apartment and seemingly discouraged to not be celebrating with anyone, not even her parents who she had never come to know, there appears in her living room Henry (Jared Gilmore). Henry happens to be Emma’s first and only child who she gave up for adoption at a younger time in her life. Emma had not seen Henry in the 12 years that he’s been alive, but fate had brought them together again. Henry lives in Storybrooke, Maine, but he also has a story book of his own called “Once Upon A Time” which he believes will help Emma to find her purpose in life. She follows Henry to Storybrooke, where she finds a community full of cheerful, normal people. Henry, however, seems to believe they are not normal. He believes that each resident of Storybrooke is a fairytale character who all perform a role from his “Once Upon A Time” storybook. Because of the deceptive curse put on all the fairy tale creatures by the Queen, none of them in reality know their true identity as fictitious characters. Nevertheless, Henry has read the storybook and knows for a fact that Emma is the illustrated savior of all the fairytale creatures. Will Emma come to accept her vital role as savior of Storybrooke, and help all reach their desired happily-ever-after?
With Rumpelstiltskin, Jiminy Cricket, Red Ridding-Hood, and even Pinocchio performing vital roles in Emma’s success to become the rescuer, “Once Upon A Time” will never leave you knowing what the next adventure will be. Rather, it will leave you wishing for more. If you are putting a hand to your chest to check if your heart is still beating, intrigued by the plot, you know you’re watching “Once Upon a Time”.
