On April 23, the Twitter account for Doctor Who teased the announcement of the new companion who would follow the Doctor in the show's Series 10.
The excitement was palpable among fans on Twitter, and the new actress was finally revealed during the halftime show of the FA Cup semi-final match: Pearl Mackie is now the companion!
Did You Spot The Prince Tribute?
Among excited reactions to the casting news, Facebook user Brian Miller pointed out that Mackie made a subtle tribute to Prince in the promo pictures. Can you spot it?
That's right, Mackie is wearing the design that can be found on the interior sleeve of Prince's LP Purple Rain.
It's a subtle and touching tribute to the music icon, who tragically passed away last week at the age of 57.
Mackie Is Incredibly Excited To Join Doctor Who
Pearl Mackie, who is best known as a theater actress, said she was incredibly excited to have joined the show.
"Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in - I can't wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series."
While Series 10 will introduce this new companion, replacing Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, it will also be the last one for showrunner Steven Moffat. It's set for release on December 25, 2016.
